This episode of the Resonant Vibes podcast is from veteran house and techno producer Angel Alanis.
.
Angel’s been producing tracks since 1997 under many monikers including the names A2, Kasper Weiss and Miguel Wihn, so the chances are that you might have heard something by him, even if you don’t know who he is.
.
His broad range of styles ranging from house and filtered disco workouts to tribal house, tech-house and minimal have helped him secure remixes and collaborations with top-tier artists including Felix Da Housecat, DJ Rush, Colette, Sinead O’Connor, Greenskeepers, Julia Fordham, Robbie Rivera and Pole Folder.
.
In 1999 Alanis released his debut album The Subconscious State of Techno and followed it up with the release of his hit Do You Like the Way You Feel When You Shake which was also the inaugural release for his imprint A-Squared Muzik. In 2004 he found himself ranked in BPM Magazine’s Top 100 DJ List after producing DJ Colette’s Dancestar Award winning song: Feelin’ Hypnotized, which later went on to be heavily licensed commercially for compilations and appeared in the film Devil Wears Prada and in a Motorola advertisement. .
More recently his projects have involved him being one of the founding partners of the techno label Klientele and part of Chicago’s Noise Floor Crew. Most notably during his time with the Noise Floor Crew they remixed Portishead’s song Third which garnered the attention of New York Magazine and Big Shot Magazine.
.
Today Alanis has parted ways with both Klientle and the Noise Floor Crew and has relocated to Cincinnati (Ohio), which is also home to Race Car Productions one of the Midwest’s more prominent techno labels. Could his time close to the label prove to be good fortune and a possible outlet for some of his future creative endeavorers?
.
Currently, he’s been working with DJ Pierre and the Afro Acid team on Pierre’s solo album, while focussing on his productions and the launch of his new independent label M-too which will focus on house minimalist music. Angel also tells us he’s working on a mainstream project called kliphart that he feels is set to build on the success of his previous work to date.
.
Can you give a quick overview of the labels you’re been released on?
.
I’ve done stuff for Tresor, Tronic, IHR, Konsequent, Laidback Luke’s Subspace, Contact, Planet of Drums and Moody.
.
So, what’s on the horizon for A-Squared Muzik?
.
More techno and I’m going to get the label on more compilations with possible vinyl releases in Europe, which is in the works for summer 2010. I’m not going to rush into it but I have a couple of distributors interested.
.
What’s your outlook on the digital download industry for 2010? What do you think needs to happen to keep things evolving in a positive direction for the next year?
.
I think more free compilations from artists, and artists need to collaborate more on projects like that. More quality over quantity and there has to be more focus from the artist releasing their own music. Not to depend on the label, the distributor, or the store for promo.
.
WAV or MP3 and can you really tell the difference on a big system?
.
Yes. WAV and 320 Kbps are the best, and I can tell – especially on a bad system where you would play good files and you would get and OK result. The rule is that a well recorded song will sound good anywhere.
.
And lastly, how was your mix recorded?
.
I did the intro on Ableton then put it on CD and I recorded the mix live on janky CD players, into DAT, then I shot it back into Logic where I added some vocal snips from the intro.
.
