Roman Azzaro – Get the Curse 085

Roman Azzaro Get the Curse

While there are many sources for getting dance music online, I only turn to a few on a regular basis. The Get the Curse podcast is certainly one of my regular, trusted sources. These guys just keep serving up the goods!

I wanted to write this blog post to give props the Get the Curse crew, and I figured I should also pick out a good mix to give you a sample of what they’re up to. There are so many quality mixes in the Get the Curse archives, I had some trouble handpicking one…but I eventually decided to highlight episode 085, from Roman Azzaro.

I poked around online, and it was difficult to find a lot of information about Roman. From what I gathered, he’s based in Paris, and he’s firmly rooted in the Parisian underground scene…the sort of DJ in town that those in the know know about. He is part of the crew running the upstart label, Coton Tige, which has some great-sounding material.

Roman’s Get the Curse mix caught my ear one night when I was working late. Right from the start, the mix gets your attention with these oddball, twisted lyrics saying, “Sniveling little bunny…bouncing up and down…scumy little creatures…run them out of town…in their tiny tunnels…scuffling underground…toxic little bunny…” (I don’t know why, but these lyrics amuse me.) Then, the beat drops, and Roman is off to the races with a dope techno set!

I like the mix from start to finish, but for this post, I’ll just give the highlights reel…I really dig the transition around the 5:33 mark, when a new musical motif arrives, but Roman works back in a snippet of the opening lyrics – a nice creative touch. Another cool part of the mix comes around the 23:54 mark; Roman’s got a nasty techno groove going, and we hear the opening lyrics from Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog, “Hey hey mama, said the way you move…” Of course, they’re tweaked out and spliced in nicely with the musical background…subtle, but neat. The climax of the mix, for me, comes when Roman drops the track, “Ekomine” (around the 42:45 mark). This track is actually on his Coton Tige label, and it’s badass! There’s a buildup in this one that culminates in a pounding beat and a wild voice that seems to be chanting some tribal ritual…appealing to the primal dancer in you.

In sum, I would strongly recommend staying tuned to the Get the Curse podcast and keeping your eyes/ears open for more dopeness from Roman Azzaro and the Coton Tige crew.
