Since 2000 electronic music fans from across the globe have made the pilgrimage every May to Detroit, the city where Techno music was born. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the Movement Festival (formerly DEMF) in Detroit.
In 2009 the Movement Electronic Music Festival recorded its best attendance figures to date since becoming a ticketed event in 2005. Some 83,322 people filled the outdoor venue last year. An international partnership was also forged with promoters from Torino Italy to create Movement Torino.
The rumors continue to be confirmed that the bearded techno-über guru Hawtin will be hot on the festival circuit this year, headlining live as Plastikman. Other headliners included Model 500 and Inner City with a total of 70 acts announced today covering a spectrum of sounds from techno through to livetronica. My line-up highlights are: Agoria, Cassy, Chris Liebling, Derrick Carter, DJ Godfather, DJ Sneak, Ida Engberg, Italoboyz, Jamie Jones, Joel mull, John Acquaviva, Josh Wink, Luke Hess, Martin Buttrich, Martyn, Michael Meyer, Mt Scruff, Oner Ozer, Redio Slave, Robert Hood, Ryan Crosson, Simian Mobile Disco and Theo Parish. You can check the full list in the graphic below, as I couldn’t find a decent HTML list to copy and paste.
Ford are the presenting sponsor this year which adds testimony to how much the commercial reach of the festival has grown. The result might be a line-up that seems too mainstream for some of the techno puritans—who’s heads will be rammed in a sub in Made in Detroit area anyway—but one that should keep the rest of us revelers happy.
$40 early bird tickets are now on sale and all the details are to be found at http://www.paxahau.com/movement/

Luke – Are you just not a techno fan? Are you looking for more mainstream artists like Tiesto, PVD, Deadmau5, etc.?
03/15/2010
Luke,
You must live under a rock, or smoke rocks. This is an amazing lineup. All-star cast if you ask me. Michael Mayer, Plastikman, Simian Mobile Disco, Magda! I’m buying my tickets ASAP

I livee in detroit and ive been goin to the movement for the last 5years.& actually this is a horrible lineup.Last year we had Deadmau5, Benny Benassi , & Bad Boy Bill.& David Guetta made a special appereance! Most of these dj’s are just Detroit dj’s.Wheres all the big dj’z like last year? Im having second thoughts of going this year..

It’s funny to see the different perspectives on this year’s lineup for the Movement 2010 Electronic Music Festival. This thread of comments seems to reflect a general divide in the electronic music fan base. You’ve got the general fan for whom a good lineup includes mainstream names like Deadmau5 and David Guetta. Then, you’ve got fans who are more drawn to the A-level DJs of more underground circles – like Jamie Jones and Radio Slave.
Having worked in the electronic music industry for years now, I sometimes forget that not everybody has heard of Jamie Jones and Radio Slave – like they’ve heard of Deadmau5 and David Guetta. And it stands to reason that people would be less familiar with, and thus less drawn to, these lesser known artists unless they are in the electronic music industry.
Oddly enough, I’m much more excited by the current Movement 2010 lineup than I would be about a lineup focused on Deadmau5 and Benny Benassi.
These are just candid thoughts, not intended to be industry snobbery…because I don’t want to be that guy who’s snubbing all things mainstream. I still enjoy listening to mixes by the big name artists, but I also keep my ears open to the lesser-known channels for fresh tunes.

Hey Paige – How about Richie Hawtin as Plastikman? Big. Detroit. Nuff said! Maybe not trance or electro, but Detroit’s a techno town
04/28/2010
Plastikman set at Coachella was the highlight of my weekend. I want more!

I think the lineup is good. It could be WAY better. For the price of admission and the amount of people that go… They could of got Flying Lotus, or Bassnectar back. They could of got The Knife for main stage one night. Carl Kox was fucking amazing last year. Deisal Boy would have been great. Aphex Twin….. Ben Benasi, Squarpusher, whatever.. There is a good lineup, but entirely WAY too much minimal techno
05/04/2010
IMO there’s not that much minimal on the bill. I see Robert Hood, and I guess you could argue that Hawtin is minimal but Plastikman isn’t. There’s plenty of ghetto-tech, livetronica, tech-house and house, but mainly a bunch of techno artists. Remember it’s a techno festival at heart!
05/04/2010
Plastikman is not minimal? Since when?
05/07/2010
I LOVE MR. SCRUFF!
05/10/2010
This lineup is ill. Dj hype…… Pretty lights…. Sneak….. Carter…. It’s gonna be tits
05/12/2010
MrScruff will make It very fine indeed
05/13/2010
I know Detroit is all about Techno, but I did notice many of the artists being of minimal genre. I personally would like to see artists such as Justice, Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, or an artist who’s a bit more melodic!

05/17/2010
I love how everyone says these ‘underground’ techno artists are so good. Mr. Scruff is the only artist on this list that doesn’t make my ears bleed.
05/17/2010
I am super duper excited. Is Ghostland really playing at Movement this year??? Excision too?? YAHOOO!!
05/18/2010
ummmmm…. Audion where are you? I Am soooo fucking happy to see that shigetto is gonna be there, next year it just needs to be an all ghostly/spectral fest
