Movement Electronic Music Festival Final Line-Up Announced

Pretty Lights
PRETTY LIGHTS PLAYS THE RED BULL STAGE AT THE 2009 MOVEMENT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL

Today’s announcement brings the total number of acts that have been scheduled thus far to 106.

Richie Hawtin, Little Dragon, The Dirtbombs, Flying Lotus, Delano Smith, Space Time Continuum, plus 47 more acts have been secured to perform at Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit’s Hart Plaza, May 28-30.

There are many names that will be must-see acts for festival goers this year. Little Dragon is a band from Sweden on the rise due to their inherent talent and also their supporting role in the recent Gorillaz album and tour.  Just a couple of weeks ago they played live on Jimmy Fallon. One of the more recognized names in ambient electronic music, Space Time Continuum, will play live at the festival for the first time since 2000. He has worked with notables such as Terrence McKenna and Bill Laswell, to name just a few.  Legendary Electro act, Detroit’s own Aux 88 is headlining the Red Bull Music Academy Stage with a full-scale live performance.  In this day and age of laptop musicians, Aux 88 is a sight to behold, practically bringing their whole studio on  stage with them.  20 year Dance music veteran Victor Calderone will bring his ever-evolving sound to Movement.  After being a resident of Pacha in New York for years, and working with Madonna to remix many singles for her, Victor has taken his formidable music knowledge and dj skills back to the underground, heading in a more techno-centric direction.

One year after an epic Plastikman performance on the Vitaminwater main stage that was followed the next night by a performance of his classic tracks on Beatport stage, Richie Hawtin returns to Movement, this time with many of the notable acts from his roster on stage with him, including Ambivalent and Gaiser.

The Dirtbombs, a Detroit garage-punk band, will offer festival-goers a brand new twist on some Techno classics from the 80s and 90s.  During their live set at the Movement Festival they will perform tracks from their album “Party Store” which offers the band’s interpretation of some of Detroit’s most recognized Techno hits.

Some of the reinterpreted tracks festival-goers should expect to hear are “Alleys of Your Mind” originally by Cybotron, “Strings of Life” originally by Derrick May, “Good Life” originally by Kevin Saunderson, “Bug in the Bassbin” originally by Carl Craig as Innerzone Orchestra.

There’s is no bigger honor than playing the Vitaminwater stage at Movement this year,” said The Dirtbombs drummer Ben Blackwell.  ”To be covering the songs of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Mike Banks, et al in front of a crowd that knows their catalog inside and out will be a challenge to say the least.”

The full line-up and ticketing information is available on the Paxahau site here.

Ricardo Villalobos cancels Movement 2010, Hawtin to sub in…

Ricardo Villalobos Cancels Movement 2010 | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music BlogWell, that TOTALLY sucks. Here’s the scoop:
.
Ricardo Villalobos scheduled performance this weekend at the Movement Electronic Music Festival Powered by Ford Fiesta has been cancelled, but Richie Hawtin has agreed to perform in his place on the BeatPort Stage Sunday, May 30 from 9 pm until midnight.
.
Goetz Guse of Cocoon Agency out of Frankfurt, Germany informed festival organizers today that Villalobos will not be able to perform at Movement. Guse said, Ricardo did not receive his Working VISA back in time due to US immigration Authorities at abroad consulates. Even with precocious legal support from the US as well as from Germany he still wasnt able to obtain the Working VISA due to unexpected bureaucratic obstacles.
.
Movement organizers expressed disappointment about the news regarding Villalobos, but are optimistic festival-goers will enjoy a Richie Hawtin performance as the replacement.
.
We are disappointed Ricardo is not able to make it, especially with it being so close to the festival, but the show must continue, said Jason Huvaere, the executive director of Movement. However, we are very grateful Richie agreed to fill in. Nowhere else will you get to experience Richie Hawtin presenting Plastikman live one night, and then the next night see an original Richie Hawtin DJ set, its going to be truly amazing.
.
The Plastikman live performance will be the headliner on the Vitaminwater Main Stage the first night of the festival, Saturday, May 29. It is scheduled for 11 p.m. to midnight. After Hawtin performs a three-hour set on the Beatport Stage, he will be aboard the sold out Voyage Royal: Im on a Boat 2 after party to perform with DJ Magda in place of Villalobos on the second floor of the Detroit Princess.

Ida Engberg stops in for a chat with RV

Ida Engberg | The Resonant Vibes Electronic Blog
If you keep an eye on the line-up for this years Movement Festival youll notice only a handful of females on the bill. There are several smaller female artists and then this years front ladies like Cassy and Magda and also Ida Engberg.
.
Engberg, a Swedish blondeshell and highly talented DJ has enjoyed a sudden rise over the last couple of years thanks to her skills behind the decks and the game-changing success of her track Disco Volante. (See, it can be done kids!). Now she features regularly at Adam Beyers Drumcode nights, and is establishing herself as a worthy international headliner. We thought wed catch up with her before her show at Movement to find out a little more…
.
Youre from Stockholm. Can you explain how you got your first gigs there, and for anyone visiting Stockholm what clubs do you recommend?
.
When I started to DJ in Stockholm I was just 18. It was a friend who was running a bar, and the DJ called in sick so he didnt have one so I just jumped in for somebody else.
.
That was my first gig and I finally got the residency there and they fired their old DJ so they apparently liked it a little. Then I played in smaller bars and clubs and then larger clubs, then I moved to Spain and I was living in Ibiza and I was playing there for a while. (more…)

Essential Road Trip Listening: Chris Liebing’s 10 Years CLR

10 Years of CLR | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music BlogNext weekend we’re driving up to Detroit for Movement Festival. Each ways it’s 5 hours or about 3 mixes worth of driving. One of those mixes will be Chris Liebing’s latest offering on his CLR label. Hopefully it’ll help us get in the mood for his set at the festival which, like his label, also enjoys it’s 10th anniversary this year..
.
I’ve listened to the mix a couple of times and I can definitely recommend it; if it’s balls to the walls techno you’re after. Unrelenting technodid you expect anything else?is delivered on a plate by Liebing. Unfortunately I haven’t given it a full review but instead I’ve included a few words I was sent about it:
.
The 10th anniversary compilation of CLR contains 10 tracks by some of the finest artist in the world of techno and defines the current sound of the label. The very supportive attitude of the artists involved and the fact that all tracks were specifically and exclusively produced for this purpose, add a unique character to this project.
.
Musically, we dive into a universe of relentless, high tech beats and soundscapes. Big bass drops unveiling sexy grooves, hypnotizing patterns and reverb rooms that surround pounding beats with sudden high range attacks. These tracks work like crazy on the floor, and thats a proven fact. This is what Techno sounds like on a 2010 technology level, big room and tough but ballsy and slick, functional yet innovative: Let all hell break loose. From classic to new, that fits the list of people who contributed, that fits the formats the project is released on.
.
It includes classic techno protagonists from the last 10 years like Adam Beyer, Alex Bau, Speedy J, Chris Liebing vs. Green Velvet, Function vs. Jerome Sydenham and new faces no less talented, such as Dustin Zahn, Brian Sanhaji, Monoloc, Pfirter and of course Tommy Four Seven.

Review: Balance 016 Mixed by Agoria

Balance 016 Mixed by Agoria | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music BlogWhen a new Balance CD arrives on my desk I usually drop it straight into the player because of the quality I’ve come to expect from the people over atEQ Recordings. Last up was a hefty 3-disc affair from Will Saul and now we’ve been treated to a double-disc affair from French producer and DJ Agoria. As with all good compilations the first play didn’t leave me 100% convinced but after several more plays it’s grown on me immensely and it’s still in heavy rotation.
.
Disc oneAller Retourstarts off in ambient, experimental territory before easing into the reverb heavy vocals of Emiliana Torrini which are backed up by an addictive guitar hook. A minute later and Agoria’s taken the vibe into the eery stripped back techno world of Arandel with a superb transition between the two tracks. That for me sums up the style of both discs with Agoria’s ability to stitch contrasting tunes together in a masterful and effortless fashion. The mix continues to a climatic yet esoteric high point with the operatics of Altre Voci and The Field’s proggy live mix of Over The Ice. Easing off the mid-disc peak he meanders back into a groovy nu-disco/garage finish with Todd Terje, Prins Tomas and Trus’me all taking their place in the line-up.
.
Balance 016 Disc Aller Retour “Soundcloud Edit” by AGORIA
.
I’m a big fan of disc one except I feel like Agoria has self indulged a tad much by including his Altre Voci tune in the middle of the mix. OK, so it’s created a peak to the disc but the operatic vocals are bang out of place alongside the other vocals on the disc, and if you consider how he’s got to this point it’s just not necessary.
.
Disc twoRising Sineis the standard 4/4 disc of the compilation. Again, I’m not going into much detail but I will say that I’ve played this disc a good deal more than it’s counterpart. Why? Because it stands out. It has more of a narrativeif you can use that term with electronic musicand with Agoria’s expert programming it just feels more complete. Quite honestly I prefer the tracks on it and I’m a big fan of tracks like the addictive You and Me remix of Ogris Debris’ G-Thong. The final 8 tracks from Einmusik’s melodic bomb Atlantis through the magnificent Serge Santiago remix of Shit Robot’s Simple Things (Work it Out) intoMartyn’s interpretation of Efdemin’s Acid Bells continue to impress me each time I listen to it. Just awesome.
.
Balance 016 Disc Rising Sine “Soundcloud Edit” by AGORIA
.
However, like on disc one I was disappointed by Agoria’s decision to go in for more mid-disc dramatics with the unnecessary cello solo which features in the mash up of Jonny Greenwood’s Tehellet andAgoria’s Parasite which, to boot, is sandwiched by Avril’s peak-time monsterFrench Kiss. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s trying to do something a bit ‘avant garde’ and ‘edgy’ here, but it disrupts the otherwise perfect flow of the disc so I could do without it all together.
.
Anyway that shouldn’t stand in the way of you checking out Agoria’s Balance because it’s really worth it. His use of vocals to anchor both discs works really well and it’s clear that he’s taken a fresh and compelling approach to producing it. More importantly it features 14 exclusives and it’s a great way to experience a fine selection of tunes that have been blended together by someone who I’m sure will become a big name.
.
It’s US release date is March 16 but for some reason Amazon has it available from March 23. You can pre-order it HERE. If you’re in Miami for WMC you should check out the Balance 016 Release Party with Agoria, Will Saul, Joris Voorn, Desyn Masiello, Chris Fortier and Luke Fair at the Victor Hotel on Friday March 26. The track lists for both discs are after the jump. (more…)

Movement 2010 Line-Up Announced

Movement 2010 | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music Blog
Since 2000 electronic music fans from across the globe have made the pilgrimage every May to Detroit, the city where Techno music was born. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the Movement Festival (formerly DEMF) in Detroit.

In 2009 the Movement Electronic Music Festival recorded its best attendance figures to date since becoming a ticketed event in 2005.Some 83,322 people filled the outdoor venue last year.An international partnership was also forged with promoters from Torino Italy to create Movement Torino.

The rumors continue to be confirmed that the bearded techno-ber guru Hawtin will be hot on the festival circuit this year, headlining live as Plastikman. Other headliners included Model 500 and Inner City with a total of 70 acts announced today covering a spectrum of sounds from techno through to livetronica. My line-up highlights are: Agoria, Cassy, Chris Liebling, Derrick Carter, DJ Godfather, DJ Sneak, Ida Engberg, Italoboyz, Jamie Jones, Joel mull, John Acquaviva, Josh Wink, Luke Hess, Martin Buttrich, Martyn, Michael Meyer, Mt Scruff, Oner Ozer, Redio Slave, Robert Hood, Ryan Crosson, Simian Mobile Disco and Theo Parish. You can check the full list in the graphic below, as I couldn’t find a decent HTML list to copy and paste.

Ford are the presenting sponsor this year which adds testimony to how much the commercial reach of the festival has grown. The result might be a line-up that seems too mainstream for some of the techno puritanswho’s heads will be rammed in a sub in Made in Detroit area anywaybut one that should keep the rest of us revelers happy.

$40 early bird tickets are now on sale and all the details are to be found at http://www.paxahau.com/movement/

Movement 2010 Line Up | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music Blog

rv_cast 019 Mixed by Tim Paris

rv_cast 019 Mixed by Tim Paris | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music BlogThis episode of the Resonant Vibes Podcast is mixed by Tim Paris
.
Today Tim Paris can be found living in London, however he built his DJ reputation in the Parisian party scene frequently playing alongside the likes of Jef K., Chlo, Alexkid and Ivan Smagghe. His sound is undoubtedly original and can be described as moody and dark but still sexy and soulful, and it’s a sound that’s been influenced by his French house heritage.
.
In around 2002 Tim Paris lent a hand to Jef K. setting up the label Crack and Speed, and he got his first break-through with a remix of Future Now which was picked up by Ralph Lawson for 2020 Vision. More recently he and Jef K. set-up another label called Marketing which serves as a primary outlet for Paris’ productions along with other regulars including Ivan Smagghe, Shit Robot, Alexkid and Lance DeSardi. Personally I think Marketing is an exciting label to follow with it’s uncompromisingly fresh spin on house, tech-house and techno.
.
What’s he doing today? Well, for his current musical project he’s teamed up with Ivan Smagghe under the nameIt’s A Fine Line. Their plan is to balance production alongside DJs shows both in clubs and on the festival circuit. So far their material has been well received as they continue to push the boundaries that encompass their sound.
.
In a similar fashion, Paris’ podcast episode sits a little outside the normal vibe we offer with the series, but over the last few days I’ve had it stuck on repeat as the blend of nu-disco and house is hard to beat. I hope you enjoy it.

An Interview with Mr C.

Mr C. | The Resonant Vibes Electronic Music BlogA few days ago I had the chance to catch up with Mr C. about his recent move to LA, getting his acting career started and his current musical endeavors.
.
If you grew up in Britain in the 90′s (and liked electronic music) you should know who Mr C. is. For those of you who didn’t here’s some background info:
.
Mr C. got his rise to fame as the MC and front man for UK pop outfit The Shamen. They had a few hits in the early 90′s but non bigger than their tune Ebeneezer Goode which was controversial thanks to it’s choice chorus of ‘eezer Goode, eezer Goode, he’s Ebeneezer Goode’.
.
The song made it to the top of the UK charts in 1992 but the BBC banned it (although later withdrew the ban) citing drug reference as the reason, a claim that the band denied. The ban didn’t make much difference though as the song had already become a symbol of good times and clubbing so the damage had been done. Ironically it now sits at the top of a completely different BBC chart.
.
Since his Shamen days Mr C. has produced under a slew of different aliases including under The Sycophant Slags name with Adultnapper. Along with Eddie Richards he had a hand in making UK tech-house what it is today, or perhaps what it was a couple of years ago given the obsession with post-minimal-bongo-laden ‘tech house’ that seems to be the rage right now.
.
He’s been behind labels like Plink Plonk, The End Recordings andSuperfreq which isa label and successful club night. He was also partners in the infamous London clubThe End with Layo Paskin.
.

.
Check out interview after the jump. (more…)
