Claude VonStroke-Fabric 46

Claude VonStroke
Fabric 46
Fabric London
It’s been awhile since the Fabric series captured lightning -in-a-bottle, that rare programmed DJ mix that sounds musically refreshing and yet feels totally spontaneous like a live set. Perhaps it has been as far back as Luciano’s  installment from last year, who knows? However, San Francisco producer and dirtybird founder Claude VonStroke humbly answers the call from the UK superclub armed with a stack of amazing tracks and a laptop full of Ableton. Personally, I’ve always been on the fence about this guy, not that it has all been his fault but because the farting bass template he created on cuts like “The Whistler” and “Deep Throat” has been ransacked by every joker from here to Bogota calling themselves “EEE-lec-ktro”. These days I can’t help but shudder sometimes when I hear his name. Thanksfully on his new Fabric mix VonStroke stretches out and away from his signature sound and showcases his wide tastes in house music- from the German kling und klong of Robag Whrume to the sheer, but perhaps overused, lushness of Stimming. He also tries to sneak in a few tracks from his own labels-although dirtybird is only mentioned once, on the last track, and it’s by VonStroke himself. Rather the focus here is more on his new techno influenced mothership offshoot- as is the whole disk-with the feeling that here’s a guy getting in touch with his extensive Detroit roots. Sometimes it doesn’t work (the Dinamoe/Clara Moto mash-up and another from Markus Schatz/Catz N Dogz) but overall the results are musically diverse enough for even the finickiest of listeners.  Hardly any of  the sounds or genres are out of place- as you might expect from an internationally recognized DJ- and all played with supremo confidence with just a dollop of humor. Well played, VonStroke.

Pearlcoder-Illex

Pearlcoder
Illex
Blackfish Productions
Kind of amazing that people are still making loungy downtempo music like this-I thought the coffee shop techno went the way of Jazzanova (i.e. deep house) when the club scene started jumping again about a half decade ago. Pearlcoder does the downtempo thing so well though-merging subdued elements of house and techno but leaning more heavily on jazz, Balearic, and ambient styles to create a muted early evening version of the full on late night hedonism of the club experience. Fans of this genre have always demanded diversity and memorable hooks and Illex is all of that and then some by adding soulful and cinematic to that list of fan criteria. There is dub reggae, ambient, trip hop, lounge, and even techno all stirred up in this dense nugget of the organic and synthetic. Some of the album does sound a little dated like an early 2000’s Bedrock chill-out compilation with flourishes of New Age-y trance arpeggios but beyond those minor flaws exist Pearlcoder who are still out there pushing the downtempo genre forward. More power to them as they have succeeded in conveying their commitment on Illex.

RV Network Competition Deadline Coming Up!

Electronic Music Network

I wanted to write this brief post to remind everybody that the RV network competition deadline is rapidly approaching!

On this Friday, May 1st, we’re going to announce the highest rated track and mix in our network, and we’re going to give rewards to the DJ and producer who created them.

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, the rewards will be as follows…

DJ REWARDS: We’re going to write an in-depth profile about the winning DJ on our blog, and we’re going to give him or her a $100 credit in our shop. We’re also going to air his or her winning mix on the Shake Down podcast, so it will be heard by more than 30,000 subscribers!

PRODUCER REWARDS: We’re going to give a $100 shop credit to the winning producer, and we’re going to sign his or her track to our own RV Digital Recordings label! We will then make the track available for sale and promote it – initially in our shop and eventually in download stores worldwide!

If you haven’t already done so, go to our homepage and use the “Click to Upload” button to share your music. Or, if you’re not a DJ or producer, and you want to have a voice in our competition, go to our network to rate some of the free mixes and tracks.

We’re looking forward to rewarding our contest winners for their time and contributions to our network…so let’s just see what happens at the end of the week!

Quality Progressive Mix from Noyd

NoydI’ve got another quality progressive mix for you…This one comes from an artist who seems to be quietly going about his business and putting out solid tunes. His name is Noyd, and he’s originally from Prizren (in Kosovo). He started getting into electronic music at age 14, and he eventually teamed up with an artist named Junitoshi to form a production duo called, “Vega.” Eventually the two went their separate ways, and Noyd got his first solo release, Shapeless, signed with the German progressive house label, Jetlag Digital, in 2008.
.
This mix I’ve posted by Noyd is a real ear pleaser. It’s also what I like to call a “sleeper” – meaning it’s the kind of mix that would have been easy to miss because there’s not been a lot of buzz around it. It’s vintage progressive house…melodic, dreamy, and emotive.
.
Enjoy!

Photos from Simian Mobile Disco Party (NYC) and a Cool Mix

On Thursday night, I had the privilege of checking out the Simian Mobile Disco party that went down at the Highline Ballroom in New York City. The event also featured sets from residents JDH and Dave P, and it was organized by the promotion group Fixed.
.
The energy at this event was simply incredible, and I had a chance to meet loads of cool people. I wanted to share the vibe of the event with our blog readers, so I’ve posted a photo gallery below.
.

.

In order to really give you a feeling for this event, I’ve also posted a Simian Mobile Disco mix below. Just click the play icon, and you’ll hear the sound of Thursday’s party ;)

As you can tell from the gallery and mix here, this party was a blast. I definitely want to give props to the Fixed crew for putting such a dope shindig together!

A Few New Labels Coming Soon…

This is a quick post to let blog readers know that we have some really quality labels arriving on the site soon! I’m excited about the this batch of labels, as there’s some outrageously good music being put out by them.
.
Quality new content is one of the areas we’re focusing on, and this is just the start of what’s to come. We’re in talks with some other distributors who’s content will improve the quality of our catalog drastically.
.
One of the things we understand at rv is if we can offer the same content as other bigger stores at competitive prices through a well designed site then it’s only a matter of time before people catch on… I mean who wouldn’t want $1.50 WAV downloads? :)

File Sharing and Bit Torrents

picture-10I’m not an advocate of illegally downloading content regardless of format, but I think most people have done it at some point. Last week the worlds largest bit torrent tracker site “The Pirate Bay” saw it’s four founders sentenced to a year in jail along with some hefty fines because they were found guilty of profiting from piracy. Ironically on the day their sentence was announced the site was still up.
.
The four-men were found guilty of having made 33 copyright-protected files accessible for illegal file sharing via the Piratebay.org Web site. After a 13-day trial, judge Tomas Norström, plus his assistant and three “namndeman” (essentially a jury with extended powers), found ample evidence for a guilty verdict, though no actual files are stored on the Web site.
.
It now emerges that judge in the case has now been accused of a conflict of interest because he’s a member of two copyright organizations. If a conflict is proven, then the case will be tried again so I’m interested to see what happens.
.
It’s worth pointing out that profiting from piracy and file sharing are two distinctly different things and in a recently conducted audit by the Bay it revealed that nearly 80 percent of tracked content was actually authorized and not copyrighted. Top operator Peter Sunde also noted that the Pirate Bay actually has less pirated content than YouTube which is probably a plausible claim.
.
I encourage everyone to support their favorite artists and labels and to buy legal downloads, but I’m not sure how downloading a few Beetles tracks without paying for them is such a bad thing. I know that there’s plenty of underground electronic music being shared illegally too, but you’re not going to find much of it on the Bay.
.
Ultimately, file-sharing is here to stay and there’s not much that can be done about it. The large copyright controllerslm and TV studios, and the major labels) will always be a step behind fighting a loosing battle. Like I already said, I don’t think it has too much impact on the niche of electronic music downloads so I’m not too worried about it. In an ideal world everyone would pay for everything they download, but alas, this isn’t an ideal world!

Save the Cannibals NYC Photo Gallery (April 18, 2009)

Last Saturday’s Save the Cannibals event at Rebel in NYC was incredible! I’ve been to a ton of events in NYC, and this one definitely stands out as one of my favorites. Deepak Sharma played a flawless opening set, carefully building the energy and catering to the crowd’s needs. Paco Osuna got on the decks afterward and played the role of dance floor destroyer.
.
I’m not a great photographer, but I took some shots just to give our blog readers a sense for the vibe at this special event. Enjoy!

The RV 2.0 Media Player Is Live!

RV Media Player

Last week, I wrote a blog post about RV’s new agile approach to web development, and I explained that our philosophy will be to "deploy new technologies early and iterate often." Well, we’ve deployed another new technology now – namely our media player - and I wanted to discuss it since it’s such a central feature of our website.

Beta Caveat

Before I give a brief explanation of the features and thinking behind our new media player, I want to state the caveat that the player, like the rest of our site, is in beta mode. It’s functional, but it will become more polished in the weeks ahead.

Pop-up vs. On-Page Dilemma

If you’ve been shopping on electronic music download stores for a while, you probably know there are two basic types of media players: those that work in a pop-up window and those that work on-page. The pop-up approach allows you to enjoy uninterrupted playback while browsing through different pages of a site, but it has the downside of requiring you to toggle between two windows. On the other hand, the on-page media player approach prevents the window toggling issue, but it requires the use of frames or extensive Flash to give you uninterrupted playback. These frame and Flash solutions can have serious downsides in terms of crippling a site’s ability to change in response to your needs.

All of these considerations basically create (what Eddie B calls) the "pop-up vs. on-page dilemma."

Our Solution to the Dilemma

Our solution to the pop-up vs. on-page dilemma was to give you a media player with the positive elements of both approaches! How? …by combining a pop-up media player with an on-page playlist manager. Each item in our shop or network has a clickable "add to playlist" icon that allows you to add that item to your playlist manager. Then, when you’re ready, you can click the "play all" button to have your playlist play in our media player.
