rv_cast 004 Mixed by Hac Le Live at Forecastle Festival

rv_cast_004_blogEpisode 004 of our rv_cast has arrived! Hac Le is our first guest DJ with a stellar live mix from this years Forecastle Festival for your listening pleasure.
.
Hac got his start into DJing with a residency at Kontrol Factory in LA in 1993, although it wasn’t until moving to Chicago in 2000 that he rekindled his romance with the decks. In 2002 he met Jason Short at Gramaphone Records—the Chicago record store—and soon they started to DJ produce together under the Kyaro moniker.
.
A tour around Mexico in 2003 saw him open up for the likes of Deep Dish and Hernan Cataneo, and later in the year he formed Play Co. with Chris Caliendo and Sasha Navarro back in Chicago.
.
2004 could be considered a turning point in Hac’s career seeing him play gigs along side Kazell and Lee Burridge in Mexico, and more notably catching the ear of John Digweed who named him the winner of the Future Music “Next Big Thing” DJ contest.
.
In 2005 Hac got the chance to play for the first time in Miami at the Winter Music Conference, and also at the Love Parade in San Francisco, which is where I met him and Jason Short for the first time at FunkyCozy afterhours party in the basement of a Mexican restaurant! (We launched RV 1.0 at the Love Parade in San Francisco back in 2005.)
.
Since ‘05 it’s been onward and upward for Hac, as a partner in the San Francisco based record label Auralism and gigs in New York, Detroit, Louisville and London along the way. In 2007 he became a listed Productions resident, and was cemented into the legacy of the listed Tikki parties in Miami. That year also saw James Zabiela naming him as the DJ Mag “Breakout DJ of 2008″.
.
I had a chance to catch up with Hac to ask him a few questions for his rv_cast which I’m pleased to share with you here.

Seth’s Picks of the Week 07-31-09

07-31-Picks

This is the first week I have had the opportunity to choose from the content coming in from some of the labels I mentioned a few posts ago. We’ve been catching up on back catalog releases. Only a few new records have made it up so far, but they’re coming, and what has already arrived has put a glint in the eyes of the gents at RV (and by gents, I mean reprobates, scoundrels, and scurvy knaves).

1. Forms, Ideas And Chips (Original Mix)BOPMedschool. I went to the Med School website to poke around and was greeted by this: “In 2006 Hospital Records announced the arrival of twisted sister Med School. Our aim is to take you deep into the realms of electronic dance music as we champion emerging talent and push a unique palette of sounds”. As my favorite Kazakastani newsman would say, “Is nice. I like”. The cuts on Clear Your Mind are varied in both style and tempo, but remain a cohesive unit – no small feat.

2. Once (Original Mix)Mr LookmanVIM RECORDS. Once is something I would be quite happy to hear on the dance floor, and, given the right frame of mind, might make me feel a tad like James Bond.

3. Fingers (Dirk Lamprecht Remix)AndradeRobotronic. Though not uncommon, I could spend a long time listening to the type of keys in Fingers.

4. Mushrooms (Justin Martin Mix)Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa HeadsAirtight. Songs with overt drug references can be a bit….. However, this remix of Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads’ Mushrooms by Justin Martin manages to pull it off.

5. Deep Silence (Original Mix)MobilizeProton Music. Big butt-mover from Proton (Not a mover of big butts, but a big tune capable of moving derrieres of all shapes and sizes). I pulled three tracks from Summer Particles 2009 and didn’t want to have to choose one. HUGE release.

6. Life (Jay Tripwire “Future Deep Remix”)LuhabraOnethirty Recordings. Perhaps my favorite of the bunch this week, Jay Tripwire brings it deep.

7. Noctornus (Steve Self Remix)9 WestDrag N Drop Records. Noctornus builds in that oh so good way. Kind of trippy, kind of proggy, kind of techy – all good.

8. Don’t Come Close (Original Mix)Monika KruseTerminal M. Speaking of techy…..

9. Couch (Original Mix)WoraklsBoeing Records. Another techy groover.

10. Radio Fligg (Original Mix)Taron-TrekkaBrut!. An early glimpse of the mind bogglingly good music coming from some of our new distributors.

Hoj’s Live Set from Varsity All-Stars 2009 Party

We’ve got some serious ear candy for you…just in time for the weekend…

This is the first live set we’re posting from listed Productions’ Varsity All-Stars 2009 Party…(click the play icon below to enjoy!)

This mix comes from Hoj, and it’s rock solid! It was a daytime set, and he keeps a constant groove going. If you listen closely to the recording, you can hear people in the background – mingling and enjoying a perfect summer day in Chicago.

Hoj is the newest addition to the listed roster, and I must say I was quite impressed with his skills behind the decks.

For those who aren’t too familiar with Hoj, his roots are in the San Francisco dance music scene, but he’s now living in New York City. He’s gained recognition by playing events across the US and abroad for Spundae, Opel, listed, and others. He’s also opened for the likes of Digweed, Lee Burridge, Hernan Cattaneo, Armin Van Buuren, and Paul Van Dyk.

Hoj is known for not restricting his music to any single genre. He says he likes it “chunky, percussive, rude, and funky.” In his sets, he tends to weave his way seamlessly through an eclectic blend of house, minimal, and techno.

RV definitely wants to thank Hoj for making it out to Chicago and for dropping such a dope set at the Varsity All-Stars Party!

Recap of Varsity All-Stars 2009 Party

On Sunday, Sam and I had the privilege of attending the Varsity All-Stars 2009 party with Anja Schneider of Mobilee Records as the headliner. In my opinion, this was one of the best events RV has ever supported! Everything about this party was outstanding – the vibe, the turnout, the people, and (of course) the music.

Before I get into my recap of the party, I want to remind everybody that we will be posting DJ sets and video from the event on our blog this week…so stay tuned!

As you may recall from my previous post, we traveled up to Chicago for this Varsity All-Stars gig. Sam and I got to the venue around 1:30pm or so, and we setup our banners, audio recorder, etc. Next, we left the spot for a couple hours – to check into our hotel and grab some food. When we got back to the party, the energy had picked up a bit, but everybody was still in daytime groovin’ mode. Sam and I started attending to business – talking to folks, passing out flyers, getting video and still camera footage, etc. While we were doing this, the party kept building…we heard killer sets from Hoj, Dino G, and Jason Patrick.

Everybody was drinking and having a great time. I met loads of super cool, interesting people – all of us bonded by our appreciation for the experience.

Eventually, Anja Schneider took the decks, and she started her set with a track that got everybody’s full attention. She gave the crowd a big build up, and when the beat dropped everybody went bananas! (more…)

It was a beautiful day as we arrived in Chicago, and the scene was set. Eddie and I were about to embark on a 12-hour marathon consisting of some chunky day time beats delivered smoothly by the listed residents and Ms. Anja Schneider. Other team players included a fine selection of strong drinks, a BBQ pit and a crowd of up-for-it party-goers all dressed in sports gear. Well, it’s was the Varsity Allstars party!
.
What’s more you should keep an eye on the blog over the next few days as we post more great content from the event, including the video. A big thanks goes to the listed crew for yet again handling business and see you in ‘10!

Content Update: New Labels and Artists!

I am not fond of name droppers. They put me off. For the sake of informed shoppers, I will, despite my aversion, drop some names in this post. We are very pleased to be starting a relationship with Intergroove, a stellar distributor of music that will assuredly be heard with great frequency around the RV office. As if getting more high quality content on the site wasn’t enough, we’ve also been enjoying getting to know some of the people at Intergroove. They’re accommodating, friendly, funny, and have put us onto some very interesting European goings-on about which I shall not speak. :) My main man Craig sent me a sheet of some of the content coming in from Intergroove. Here are just a few of the names that jumped out at me…

intergroovelabels

Some of the labels from whom content is rolling in at this very moment include: 8BIT, Be As One, Bloop Recordings, Cécille, Cray1 Labworks, Fear of Flying, Hell Yeah, Hi Freaks Recordings, Hypercolour, King Kong, Kismet, Klap Klap, Kontra-Musik, Minilogue, Morris / Audio, Oslo, Out of Orbit, Safari Electronique, Schieber, Trunkfunk Records, UTC Music, WTM, and Z-Schallplatten. I am particularly excited about Cécille and Oslo. One of the high points of my trek to this year’s WMC was the Cécille/Oslo party we co-hosted with our pals at listed at the Victor Hotel. I had such a good time that the names of the two labels have been etched into my memory.

And now, some names. I’m not bragging. I promise. I’m just excited…
Adultnapper, Butane, Danton Eeprom, Derrick Carter, Jay Haze, John Dahlbäck, Lee Curtiss, Luke Solomon, Moguai, Nick Curly, Patrice Baumel, Seth Troxler, Sharam Jey, Shaun Reeves, SLOK, Terry Lee Brown Jr., and The Timewriter. Sam put me on to a Patrice Baumel mix last year and he’s been on my radar ever since. This is just a glimpse at all of the great content we’re so happy to now feature on Resonant Vibes.

For you trance bois and girls out there…

Resonant Vibes has long been an outlet for Tiesto’s Black Hole recordings and affiliate labels including Songbird, In Trance We Trust , Avanti and more. We’ve been a bit off our game since launching the new site, but we’re getting back on track as quickly as possible. A sign of this progress, we’re about to receive all of the Black Hole releases we’ve been missing, and will once again be featuring their new releases.

rv_cast 003 – Mixed by Sam Gracie – The Goods Just Keep Comin’

RV Cast

We’re on a roll with the RV Casts. Sam has donned his DJ hat once again to bring you another creatively blended sampler of some of the freshest underground tunes on the market today. For Sam, I’m sure being a DJ and the COO of RV is kind of like being a kid who owns a candy store. We love dance music over here, and every week loads of new tunes keep rolling in!
.
Sam was really pleased with the quality of the tracks in this mix. If you take one look at the tracklist, you’ll see why…he’s featuring releases from labels like Trapez, Kompakt, Om Records, and CMYK…and from artists like Radio Slave and Gui Boratto.
.
Like RV Cast 002, this mix was recorded live, so it has that intangible feel of being a true DJ set. It keeps chugging from start to finish, going from one solid track to the next…and the transitions are spontaneous and ear-pleasing. Have a listen; we think you’ll dig it.
.
Of course, for those interested, I’ve posted a tracklist below with hyperlinks in case you want to grab one of these gems in our shop.
.
1. Amir – Rocky Mountain [Trapez Ltd]
2. Berik M – Cenote Drive (Avgoustino and Manolaco Remix) [Blaq Records]
3. Broombeck – The Clapper (Daso Remix) [Opussum Recordings]
4. Drehkontrolle – True Funky [Malatoid Records]
5. John Monkman – Phono Spirit (Lee Jones Remix) [Further Project Records]
6. Kozin – Unexpected Feat Platona (Melt’s Edit) [Telepathy Digital]
7. Gui Boratto – No Turning Back (The Mole’s MMD Mix) [Kompakt]
8. MRI – Rough [Resopal Schallware]
9. Radioslave – Orchestrating Maneuvers In The Dark (Edit) [Om Records]
10. Gene – Goa Morning [Soap]
11. Alessio Mereu – Two Months [CMYK]
.
Enjoy!

Chicago Varsity All-Stars 2009 Party – Featuring Anja Schneider

Chicago Varsity All-Stars 2009

Listed Productions is back at it again, and we couldn’t resist getting involved with this event…

Brace yourself for the third incarnation of the Varsity All-Stars party! With former Varsity headliners Adultnapper and Cassy, listed has a proven track record of going right after the heart of the underground. This year will be no different, as they welcome Mobilee front woman Anja Schneider as the headlining act!

Every time we get involved with a listed event, it turns out to be an incredible experience – like the Leeeeky Tikki party and the Cecille and Oslo Records Showcase. We’ve got a history of supporting their events, and I’m stoked about heading up to Chicago this weekend for this one.

This Varsity All Stars party is going down on Sunday, July 26th, at Moretti’s in Chicago. Things will get started at noon and keep going into the evening. There will be food (from a BBQ pit), sand volleyball courts, and (of course) loads of mind-blowing tunes. Seriously, you don’t want to miss this one!

Seth’s Picks of the Week 07-24-09

07-24-Picks
.
What a week. This top ten list is probably my favorite to date. The choices were of such quality and quantity that I must include some honorable mentions. MC Lovin (Original Mix) by LARGE on Haikai Music get a nod for fusing minimal beats with audio clips of McLovin dialogue from Superbad. I also feel compelled to draw attention to I Love You (Original Mix)Sean BiddleEighttrax and Secrets (Original Mix)PimoOperating System. While not typically my style, these two electro/disco/funky/house tunes are undeniably fun and danceable.
.
1. Spice Market (Influx Mix) – Joel Mull and Sean Palm – Railyard Recordings. If Adam Beyer is on your side, I’m probably going to give you a few spins. This is only one of many worthwhile cuts from this record.
.
2. Still Grooving (Original Mix)Alex BrinkenAhoren music. Fun glitchy minimal. The other song on this release is called O ist mein ukelele!. Can you go wrong?
.
3. Equinox (BarBQ Remix)LuckystarsSupport House Records. Equinox epitomizes that perfect combination of deep and slightly techy that flat out gets me going.
.
4. Fly With Me (Original Mix)CooccerNext Dimension Music. Subtle arrangement and well-placed, counterpoint-laden melodies.
.
5. Rabbit Hole (Facundo Romano Dub)Marcelo VasamiKansak Recordings. Kansak back for yet another appearance on the list. Make it feel good.
.
6. Flight 4020 (Original)Jimmy & Fer FerrariSo Sound Recordings. Flight 4020 has the beat and the synths you want. If you want to dance, that is.
.
7. Shake Before Use (Original Mix)Cid IncProton Music. Big, end of the night, time to bring it home track.
.
8. Agatho (Original Mix)Robbie Pardoel & Van HilstManual Music. I LOVE this track. It was tough to pick just one Manual selection this week. They put out a variety of tunes in different genres, but always hit the mark. Check out Umek’s Ricochet Effect (Original Mix) and Applescal’s What She Did (Original Mix).
.
9. Salmonella (Stefan Tretau Remix)Gabriel FerreiraMiniatura Music. I’m not sure what the title is all about. When the music is good, does it matter?
.
10. Colour Of Love (Derek Howell Remix)SoulfinderOutside the Box Music. Derek Howell returns to the list with Colour of Love. Uplifting and groovy, but don’t take my word for it. Listen to it!
