Seth’s Picks of the Week 09-27-09

09-27-09 Top 10
As this post is going up Sunday, technically it’s the picks from last week. I took on some new duties at RV in a week that happened to coincide with my birthday, and I’m lucky enough to have friends who had me out celebrating Wednesday through Saturday. ;) Needless to say, I had my hands full. Better late than never, right?
.
1. Disconnected (Sascha Funke Mix)Haito GöpfrichBoxer Recordings. Both John and I were disappointed to find that Sascha Funke is not related to actor, analrapist, published author, and friend of Carl Weathers; Tobias Funke. None the less, it’s a good track.
.
2. The Third Dream (Original Mix)ZheDP-6 Records. I can’t say enough about this release. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard an album of this size retain quality throughout. Lots of tracks, lots of variety, lots of goodness.
.
3. El Fuego (Berger Remix)Benno Block & Derhardt040-Recordings. 040-Recordings seems to be popping up on my list frequently. I can’t help it. I like it.
.
4. Dockyard (Original Mix)PiemontMy Best Friend / MBF. This is going to be a big release from MBF. Shipyard is a great track as well.
.
5. Cocktail Tokio (Original Mix)Kresy And HandrusGalvanic. Cocktail Tokio could be my favorite track of the week. If I didn’t work for an electronic music outfit, I would undoubtedly get strange looks from my coworkers for the things that happen at my desk when this one is coming through the cans.
.
6. Disjointed (Original Mix)AskaniHarkee Records. When I saw the cover for Revenge of the Lizards, I knew I was going to like it.
.
7. Liberation (Estroe Remix)AlemoEevoNext. Liberation immediately reminded me of a track from a Patrice Baumel mix, which counts for a lot in my book.
.
8. Ten Thousand Bridges (Original Mix)Darius SyrossianBreakout Audio. This is the first release we have received from Breakout Audio. I’m glad we did.
.
9. Conga Loca (Original Mix)Francesco GemelliGlobox. Typically, Latin-flavored electronic music is not my cup of tea. I think that the real deal has such organic rhythm that it usually doesn’t translate well to something with programmed quantized beats. Conga Loca has hints, but just enough to sound good (to me) without making me wish I was listening to the Buena Vista Social Club, which is what usually happens.
.
10. Bolka (Original)Prescott, Paul MadFairlads Digital Records. Another solid release and a good way to wrap things up. Until next time…. (hopefully on Friday instead of Sunday)

re:produce 004: Kazell – Out Now, Exclusively on RV!

Techno and house samples from KazellWe just released a stellar new sample pack, re:produce 004: Kazell. This one is available exclusively on RV, and it offers 125 MB of uberlicious, inspiring sounds for just $10!

You probably already know that Kazell is an exceptional DJ, but I’m still going to say a bit about him before describing his re:produce pack

Kazell is a UK native and Los Angeles transplant. When he first got to the States in 1991, he started building an impeccable reputation in Atlanta (his home base) and all along the East Coast. If you’ve heard his music, then you know he plays a mind-stimulating breed of tunes – a fusion of dub, tribal, and breaks, layered on top of a tech house base. More recently, Kazell has broken into the upper echelons of the dance music industry, going from “one of the hottest DJs in warmup” (according to the L.A. Times) to a label owner and peak hour headliner in demand worldwide. In making his ascent in the industry, Kazell has played gigs with the biggest DJs in the world like Sander Kleinenberg, Deep Dish, Sasha, and Digweed (at their request).

In addition to his success as a DJ, Kazell has amassed a solid body of work in the studio. His critically acclaimed 2003 debut release Driven was voted “best compilation of the year” by Jive Magazine. His tracks have also appeared on top labels like Global Underground and Lost Language, and they’ve been featured on compilations by DJs like Sander Kleinenberg and Nick Warren.

On a more personal note, I must say that I’ve been an ardent fan of Kazell since I first heard his Kiss 100 guest mix back in 2006 – amazing, vintage prog ;)

Obviously, we were pleased to have Kazell do the honors for creating re:produce 004, and he absolutely delivered the goods! His aim in creating this pack was to offer you a view directly into his world of production. This top-shelf sample collection includes:

          9 Arp Sequences
          7 Bassline Sequences
24 Drum and Percussion Hits (with a flexible NI Battery Kit)
          24 Grooves
          2 Synth Risers
          4 Synth Chords/Pads

As an added bonus, Kazell threw in five Native Instruments “Massive” patches, which are crafted to allow for superb flexibility and control. He recorded all of his re:produce sounds using Logic, deriving sounds from analogue and digital sources.

When asked for feedback about the re:produce 004 pack, Kazell said:

It’s great to build a track from the ground up, synthesizing every element, but for most of us that’s just not realistic. With this pack, I wanted to share some of the custom building blocks I reach for when starting a new track. I tend to write these types of parts when I’m in between projects and keep them as flexible and open ended as possible. I hope you enjoy this sample pack.

To check out a preview of the re:produce 004: Kazell pack, just click the play icon below. We think you’ll like what you hear ;)

rv_cast 009 Mixed by Alland Byallo

Alland Byallo | Resonant VibesThe Resonant Vibes podcast episode 009 has been mixed Alland Byallo, a San Francisco based techno DJ and producer. He’s a resident at [KONTROL] which is one of the longest running and best regarded techno nights in the Bay Area—possibly even in the country—and has played gigs alongside some of the biggest names in the business.
.
His recent full-length album “Brick by Brick” was recently released to a slew of positive reviews and gained support from a good number of heavy-hitters in the industry. The album is a collection of 10 tightly produced tracks that sit somewhere between techno and tech house, and features sophisticated drum sequencing alongside what I’d describe as slightly unconventional use of pads for this style of techno.
.
With a string of new releases in the pipeline on labels like Auralism, Hallucination Ltd., Vellum Recordings and his own Nightlight Music, it’s clear that Alland is playing an important role in helping to shape the future sound of techno emanating from the United States’ West Coast.
.
I’ve listened to Alland’s podcast a few times and it strikes me as the right way to approach doing a DJ mix; it starts off deep and a little techy before easing into the groove and stepping things up. Towards the end he slowly takes the vibe as it moves into it’s natural conclusion.
.
Can you tell me what you’re currently working on?
.
My new release on my own label, Nightlight Music, just came out this week. Right now I’m somewhere between graphic design mode and remix mode. The remixes are stacking up, as I’m in between studios. So everything is started, but far from finished. On deck are remixes for Subsensory, Noice!, Vizual—Josh Iz’s new label—a deep house remix for Jay Tripwire, and two versions of a sweet little remix for Adjunct Audio. I’m also slowly working on some originals for a Liebe*Detail digital release, as well as something for Hallucination Ltd. Also my EP for Missive is out soon! Smokin’ remix by Alexkid. As far as design work goes, I’m making lots of flyers for a few steady clients and working on a Microsoft Zune project as a subcontractor for a friend. Lots to do! (more…)

A San Francisco LovEvolution Preview: How to Get listed

listed Productions float | 2008 LoveFest | Resonant VibesIt’s that time of year again. The long summer days are officially behind us, and as we make an almost ceremonial descent into the winter months there’s time for one last summer fling. What’s more it’s a free fling full of “Love” and it’s set in the heart of San Francisco. It’s a fling where music, sun, good people and good times can all get it on one last time.
.
That’s right, it’s time for San Francisco’s annual Love “Something” parade. This year it’s called “LovEvolution” and for more information on why it’s name keeps changing you can visit the organizers’ site HERE.
.
Regular readers of this blog will know that rv has a soft-spot for the fine people over at listed Productions. We’ve been involved in several of their past events and they put on ridiculously good parties while understanding what’s involved to make them a success. They know that it takes the right combination of world-class talent, mind-blowing sound systems and quirky themed productions to bring out the exhibitionist in us all. The result is an experience you’ll keep talking about. It’s even a little piece of history in the making if you’re lucky.
.
For this year’s LovEvolution weekend listed are setting the bar high with an insane schedule of 4 parties in 3 days. Each of their parties is unique and worthy of it’s own blog post, but I’ve condensed them all into one. I will say is that if you’re planing to be anywhere remotely close to the Bay Area over the LovEvolution weekend you OWE it to yourself to attend one of their parties. It’s that simple.
.
Tyrant | Resonant VibesFriday: Tyrant featuring Lee Burridge and Craig Richards
The Scoop: Wow, what a way to start! This is the first time Lee and Craig have played together Stateside as Tyrant in almost 10 years. Tyrant built a reputation as the residents of London’s Fabric nightclub by providing the backbone to the clubs musical direction. Together they understand music in a way that’s truly mind-expanding and they have a constant focus on keeping the vibe going. Combine that with a slew of unforgettable Tyrant tunes and you start to get an idea of what to expect. listed resident Mike Khoury has established himself as Burridge’s opening DJ of choice in North America, so he should provide the perfect start to a very special night of music.
.
Plenty of additional production is being trucked in to transform Club 525 into something a bit special for the night so we think you’d be a fool to miss out on it. What’s more, we’ll be there taking photos and video for the blog, so you should really come along for the bonus of making it into one of our galleries or videos! (more…)

Exclusive Audio Interview with Jesse Miller from Lotus

.

Resonant Vibes is very excited to give our readers an exclusive audio interview with Jesse Miller, the bass player in Lotus. (Click the play button below to check it out.)

I originally mentioned Lotus to the Resonant Vibes community in my “Livetronica” blog post. They are an incredible band that has been bridging the gap between the rock jam band culture and the electronic music scene for awhile now. I have had the pleasure of seeing them play in Denver, Colorado, as well as at the Summer Camp Music Festival, and they always bring the heat! They are about to embark on a two-month fall tour all over the United States. I highly recommend you check them out if they are in your neighborhood. To learn more about Lotus, check out their profile page in the RV Network!

Also, Lotus has given us an Exclusive Pre-Release of the track “Hammerstrike (Kypski Remix)” , from their new double album Oil on Glass / Feather on Wood, which hits stores on October 6th, 2009. Click HERE to download the exclusive new track for free!

I was able to catch up with Jesse Miller on the phone. We talked about a wide range of subjects like his experience at The Rothbury Music Festival, Richie Hawtin, other DJ influences, lighting design, and the new album.

Enjoy this delicious exclusive interview!

Seth’s Picks of the Week 09-18-09

09-18-09 Top 10

This is one motley group of songs. For the most part, they’re either really techy, or really weird, and sometime they’re a bit of both. There are also some RV newcomers, so if you hear something you like, make sure to check out those links.
.
1. I’m Down With R2D2 (Original Mix)Jamie JonesCrosstown Rebels. This one would have made it on title or artist alone, but I’ll be doggone if the music ain’t good too.
.
2. Triangular Hour (Original Mix)BurnskiMorris / Audio. The portion of Triangular House that is in the mix only gives you a hint of what’s in the song. The other two cuts on the release are winners.
.
3. LNDN027 (Original Mix)GarnicaGalaktika Records. Another tune that finds itself in good company on its release Sexy People EP, LNDN027 edged out the others, but barely.
.
4. Gengis Khank (Original Mix)Trieb11HZ Recordings. Again with the clever track names… and good music… and weirdness. One of my favorites this week.
.
5. Black Forest (Original Mix)Voko040-Recordings. Black Forest is trippy!
.
6. Pluito (Original Mix)Yan OxygenPacked Music. This is a bonafide, Grade A certified, SAE approved “good times will be had” track.
.
7. Excited (Original Mix)Djos’s Davis, John ModenaFusion Recordings. I like the way this song moves.
.
8. E.F.A. (Original Mix)Reuben Keeney - sMACk Recordings. E.F.A. is one of the more “normal” sounding tracks of the lot, but don’t interpret that as borring.
.
9. Temperamental (Manuel De La Mare Remix)MikasProgressive Grooves Records. Temperamental brings it home.
.
10. Techno Juice (Original Mix)GlitterNuuktal Digital. More whacked-out music that gives way to some groovin’ techno.

Julie Thompson – A Sneak Peak

julie_thompson

One of my longest running work associations is with a few of the gentlemen at Black Hole Recordings. RV was working with Black Hole before I came on the scene, so as my duties began to broaden in scope, I started making “e-friends” all around the world, and these guys were among the first. They’re easy going and definitely on the ball.

Some time ago, I received an email from the Black Hole camp telling me about Julie Thompson. I was busy when it came across the desk and lost track of it. I happened upon the message a week or two ago and started to do a bit of digging. The more I read about her, the more intrigued I became. I went back through her résumé. Her early appearances as a guest vocalist on various tracks were good – but not unlike any number of female vocals being played in clubs the world ’round. I would read a bit of her bio, and then try to find examples of corresponding music. For an artist on the verge of releasing her first full-length solo album, she’s covered a great deal of ground in a short period of time. Her ascent from then to now goes something like this (the whirl-wind bio): 2003’s Nothing with James Holden was released on Fatboy Slim’s Loaded/Skint, and ended up on big mix comps by the likes of Deep Dish, PVD, and Ferry Corsten. Next, she’s on the festival circuit singing with Freestylers at Glastonbury. 2006 sees Julie team up with Alan Bremner under the alias “Attic” and puts out a record on Dave Seaman’s Audio Therapy. Most artists would be riding high at this point, but Julie is just getting started. She’s scooped up by Tiesto, cuts some vocals for some of his tracks, and tours the world with him doing live vocals.

This is the excerpt from her bio that really got me: “Not aiming to be stigmatized purely as a trance vocalist, Julie expanded her territory and collaborated with UK house producers Freemasons”. She definitely has the voice and ambition, and couldn’t be better connected. I think too many artists are content to stay in one corner and play it safe. Ms./Mrs. Thompson strikes me as quite the opposite. I think we could hear a good deal of different things from her in the future, which is more than I can say about many artists.

Julie Thompson on her soon to be released debut album ‘Feeling For Corners’:
“I wanted to write an album that was lyrically honest and song based. Each track was written at a piano. I was really pleased that Black Hole Recordings wanted to release it and that Andy Duguid agreed to produce it. The whole album was written at a time when lots of changes were taking place in my life and the album depicts my deepest thoughts and feelings of that specific period.”

Click here to get a taste of the single that was released ahead of the full album due out this fall.

A Guided Tour of the New Pioneer CDJ-2000

Thanks to my friend Evan for sending over this video introduction to the much-hyped Pioneer CDJ-2000. It’s expected out in November 2009, with a suggested retail price of €1,799. Needless to say, I won’t be first in line to buy a pair!

rv_cast 008 A Blipswitch Exclusive Mixed by J.Rogers

The Resonant Vibes Podcast | J.Rogers | Blipswitch DigitalFor this rv_cast we bring you the first installment of “Blipswitch 2009 Mixed” a full-length mix compilation compiled and mixed by Blipswitch Digital label boss J.Rogers.
.
Blipswitch Digital is a record label based in San Francisco, and J.Rogers describes it as having “a core sound focused in dubstep, minimal/techno, tech house, and all the bubbling areas in between.” Their first release was in July 2008, at a time when the minimal sound had saturated the European electronic music scene, but was still popular in the US. Dubstep was on the verge of explosion in the US around then too, and the label aims to fuse the best elements of both sounds. With artists on their roster like Alland Byallo, Chris Fortier, Eskmo, Dave Aju, Antiserum and Coalition of the Killing, and support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Richie Hawtin, Headhunter, [a]pendics.shuffle, 2562, Xpansul, and John Tejada, it’s clear to see that the label is on an upwards trajectory.
.
I’m usually a little reluctant to delve into full length commercial compilations as there’s no shortage of great mixes you can find for free online. However, this one is a little different as it’s being released in conjunction with the unmixed tracks—which will be available exclusively in the rv shop a week before everywhere else—and it’s also being podcast two weeks prior to it’s release. I’m not sure what it makes this mix then… part promotional tool and part commercial compilation perhaps? Either way, it’s definitely worth a listen! (more…)

Site Updates for Week 38

We’ve applied a dollop of change to the RV web site this week. We’ll start by detailing the most obvious changes, but before we do that, we’ll have to ask some of you to put on your imagination caps while we engage in a little role playing:

Forgotten Password Screen
So, you’re a returning customer to Resonant Vibes, your favorite electronic music download store. It’s been awhile (hours, maybe even days) since you placed your last massive order of the most sensibly priced tracks in the land. However, with  your mind so thoroughly blown by your shopping experience combined with Swayze’s passing, you’ve forgotten your password to login to RV. Before this week, you would have had to email us to reset your password. Clearly, this was less than ideal. Thus, we arrive at our most significant feature for this week: Password Reset:

It’s simple. When you find yourself scratching your head at the login screen, click the Forgotten Password? link beneath the login form. This will take you to a page where you can input your email address. We’ll then send a link to your email address that will allow you to change your password. Keep in mind that the link in the reset email is only good for 24 hours, so make sure that you’ve let your SPAM filter know that we’ll be coming.

That’s not all, folks. We’ve also added some other features for which you’ve been clamoring:

Cue Screen
Cue your music: As you may remember, before we vastly improved our media player, we included the ability to cue tracks and mixes for the media player. However, once we released the latest round of media player updates, we dropped this feature. For the time being, everything you added to the media player was cued to play immediately. Now, a click on the Cue link will simply add the item to the end of your media player playlist, where it will wait its turn. Almost as if you had queued it!

Search Results ScreenBlog search results: A close friend of RV pointed out that, while our search results are great for finding music in our store and network, they don’t really help much with finding matching results in our blog. While we have not yet integrated blog content into our search engine, we’ve included a convenient link at the top of the search results page that will take you to a blog search results page. It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction and will allow make searching the entire RV universe a bit easier.

That’s about it for this week. We’ve made some other slight updates and fixed some bugs, but have been busy working on the overhaul of the RV network. It’ll be worth it. It will change your life.
