Quick Review of Estroe’s Elemental Assets

Estroe - Elemental Assets | Electronic Music Blog | Resonan VibesThis weekend, I decided to give Estroe’s album “Elemental Assets” a run for it’s money at loud volume. I’ve listened to it a few times from the comfort of my headphones but this is the first time I’ve experienced it in all it’s “livingroom techno/listening” glory.
.
It’s the first full length album to be offered by Connaisseur Recordings a label based in Offenbach, Germany. I’m not sure how they decided on the livingroom techno genre but I think it sums up what you can expect.
.
Estroe’s a talented producer and it’s clear she’s more than capable of holding her own alongside the other Connaiseur artists. I like the way the album starts and how it moves into a Detroit style track called “Late Night Thinking” complete with lush synths and a stripped-back vibe.
.
Next up is “Passionate Timidly” which is probably my favorite on the album along with “My Challenge“, and together they remind me of mid-90’s progressive house. But they both have a contemporary twist and somehow wouldn’t sound out of place on a Northern Exposure album. Other notables include “Le Flaneur” (featuring vocals by Miss Kitten), and “Updraft“. On closer listening it’s clear to see that the “livingroom techno” tag is appropriate and I’d love to get my hands on club orientated remixes one day… but is it really techno?
.
Elsewhere driving basslines and rhythms alongside melodic synths and pads continue to evoke more mid-90’s melancholy. I’m sure some people will make sophisticated Detroit references but I grew up in the UK listening to plenty of Sasha and Digweed; and it sort of reminds me of that.
.
However, in other spots it does have a clear techno vibe which people will find appealing but for me this isn’t the essence of the album. It reminds me of Orbital and it reminds me of The Future Sound of London. What’s more it reminds me of the unforgettable nights I experienced growing up, similar to what was captured in the film Human Traffic. (If you haven’t seen it, you really should… follow the link to check out the preview.)
.
I can’t quite place it, but I feel like something doesn’t add up when I listen to Elemental Assets. Don’t get me wrong: I really enjoyed listening to it, and it probably has more to do with my confusion between what I think Detroit techno is and what reminds me of mid-90s prog. It’s like the sum of the parts don’t add up the way you expect them to, but at the end of the day it’s a solid first album from a talented producer, released by a very solid label.
.
Elemental Assets by Estroe is released November 6th, on Connaisseur Records.

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 17th of October 2009

10-17-09 Top 10
1. Brunchin Mesclum (Original Mix)JobbPercusa. One of the first electronic albums I bought was St. Germain’s Tourist. This track takes me to a similar place.
.
2. Roswell (Original Mix)DualtonVivid. I have nothing insightful or descriptive to say about this one. I like it – end of story.
.
3. Questions (Original Mix)Maik LoewenNiveous Records. This is a great track on a great album. The combination of the claps and that single strummed chord are great, and then the beat comes in – money.
.
4. Bulgaria (Original Mix)Nick CurlyCécille. I’ve been looking forward to 1.3 for some time, and the bass in Bulgaria alone made it worth the wait. If this doesn’t make you want to dance, I don’t know what will.
.
5. Hit Em Where It Hurts (Original Mix)DJ SneakRobsoul. Speaking of bass….
.
6. Wide Awake (Original Mix)SolabFortek. Can you use the adage broken record on an electronic music blog? The bass is great in this one too – and then some synths come after you… (Not the evildoing kind)
.
7. Within You (Rob Glennon’s Night Freak Version)Mark O’SullivanNice & Nasty. Speaking of synths, this track comes from one of a few recent Mark O’Sullivan records, in which they are used to great extent without getting at all banal.
.
8. To Be (Original MIx)Little NancyCosmo Deep Records. Little Nancy gets a little nasty on this one. There is just enough of an electro grind to make it that right kind of dirty.
.
9. Torque (Murat Kilic Remix)Felix NagorskySUBSONIC MUSIC. Torgue brings it back a little towards St. Germain territoy, but then get’s techy.
.
10. Futurama (Original Mix) - GregorhythmeCityfox. There are parts of Futurama that I wouldn’t call whimsical, but they’re not too far off. Still a very danceable track.

re:produce 005: AOE – Out Now, Exclusively on RV!

Techno and tech house samples from Absence of EssenceWe just released another killer sample pack, re:produce 005: AOE. This one is available exclusively on RV, and it offers 103 MB of infectious, delightfully warped techno and tech house sounds for just $10!

Absence of Essence (AOE) is the Atlanta-based production trio consisting of Darius Kohanim, Knix, and Dee Washington. These artists are collectively responsible for releases on labels like Lobotomy Records, Audio Therapy, Proton Music, AlterImage Recordings, Influx Audio, Hunya Munya, and Emote Music. AOE has worked alongside, and seen their tracks remixed by, the likes of Pig & Dan, Habersham, and a host of other top-tier producers.

The AOE members share a passion for the technical aspects of their craft and for the creation of forward-thinking electronic music. Their re:produce 005 sample pack is the cutting-edge product of three creatively warped minds. This collection is filled with intense, twisted sound effects, rhythmical noise and synth loops, mangled vox effects, and wicked drum patterns with dirty techno undertones. Most of the samples were recorded at 126 bpm, and they are all ready for use in Ableton Live. AOE designed these unique signature sounds using Logic, Cubase, Native Instruments, and several other audio production tools.

To get a taste for the innovative, mind-bending sounds in AOE’s re:produce 005 pack, just check out the preview by clicking the play button below ;)

Enjoy!

RV Mix Contest 001 – A 2 Horse Race!

Resonant Vibes Mix Contest 001 | Resonant Vibes

That’s right blog readers, as our inaugural mix contest enters it’s final weekend two mixes are standing ahead of the rest of the field! Each of the mixes are different in styles and each of the DJs seems to have done a great job promoting their mixes to help drive their ratings up.

Now, for you readers of the blog that might not know much about our network let me explain a little bit more… Our Electronic Music Network is a section of the site where you can upload your own mixes and tracks for free. You can find great live sets by the worlds biggest DJs alongside mixes from up-and-coming DJs who are looking for more exposure; which is really what the rv network is all about. All the content in the network is ratable and free to download.

We recently updated the network to improve everything from how you browse to it’s design and feel. We also developed a way of running contests to reward the people who upload the most popular mix or track in a given period. (We know that everyone has a competitive side in them somewhere!) What’s more we’ve partnered with MixMeister to give away a copy of their Fusion software every two weeks—worth a cool $330—and now two DJs have emerged that are battling it out for top spot!

As I write this Mike Briscoe’s mix (+18/-0) has Stephen Wiley’s mix (+21/-4) nudged out for first place. What’s really impressive is how Briscoe entered with guns-blazin’ by uploading only yesterday! We’ve given people the ability to share and promote their mixes on places like Facebook and Twitter so I guess it’s come down to Mike having a great social network of friends that have got behind him and rated up his mix really quickly.

So, now it’s in the hands of people like you to play a part in deciding which mix is worthy of winning this cycle. Why don’t you check out both mixes and rate them as you feel appropriate? (View the current standings HERE.)

If you’d like the chance to win a copy of MixMeister Fusion yourself, Mix Contest 002 starts on Monday morning at midnight (EST) which gives you the whole weekend to get a new mix recorded. And don’t forget check out the rv shop to grab some new tunes for your mix!

STS9 & Telepath Live at The Brown Theatre in Louisville, KY

.

Last night may have been the best concert I have seen this year. Definitely in my top 5 of the year without question. As some one who has just returned home to Louisville, KY after 4 years out in Denver Colorado I can tell you that Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) is the hottest band since Phish. I originally mentioned STS9 to the Resonant Vibes community back in my Livetronica blog post. This unfortunately was my first time ever seeing the band perform live and I now regret, more than one can imagine, not tagging along with my friends to catch these guys the numerous times they played Red Rocks Amphitheater or The Filmore while I was attending Denver University. This should mean a lot to anyone who knows me, as I have long been dubbed the non-believer, constantly preaching about how the band was just not that good and I could not understand the buzz. Well that all flew out the window last night at The Brown Theatre in Louisville, KY!

To begin I fully believe one must experience this band live in order to truly understand the magic of what they are creating. These guys are not a rock band, they are not a jam band, an electronic band, or a funk band. Simply put an STS9 concert is like an alien space ship blasting through the universe at the speed of light into another cosmic realm with a tripped out raging dance party going on inside. It is not a concert at all but more of a spiritual awakening. As my buddy Mitch said last night “Welcome to the tribe!”

Now I know I’m late to jump on bored the spaceship so I’ll try to keep my preaching to a minimum since this is not a new experience for many.

The show at The Brown Theatre started super slow with a very late blooming crowd. I got to the venue just in time to introduce myself to the opening act Telepath, who allowed me to observe their performance form side stage. These guys are absolutely stunning in the own right. As a member of STS9’s view own label 1320 Records, which is one of the hottest Independent labels around right now, I can tell you these guys bring the heat.

The trio is made up of Curt Heiny on Bass, Michael Christie on Keyboards and Mike B on Drums. In the short 45-60 min set they played, Telepath went through a journey of world/ethnic sounds saturated with thick beats that made you forget you were in a theatre and not dancing around a fire in a remote area of the Middle East or India. The essence of the performance was that laptops & sequencers were just as important as playing an instrument, and they combined the two elements with such sophistication that is came across like a top class non-stop DJ mix which moved seamlessly through Downtempo, Breakbeat and Dub! A real treat to hear and much bigger treat to see live. Check out Telepath now! Download a 30 minute promo mix by them right HERE. Also you can buy a lot of Telepath music in the Resonant Vibes Shop!

After Telepath’s set ended at about 9pm the crowd started forming very quickly. With a short 30 minute equipment change and a flickering of the house lights STS9 took the stage too a screaming, glow stick spinning crowd of probably about 800! I instantly lost my friends in the frenzy of getting to our seats, only to realize they were way up in the front dancing in the aisles along with everyone else. No one was paying attention to who’s seat was who’s. In that moment is was just a dance wherever you want kind of show and the vibes were positive like that through out the night! Since this was my first STS9 experience I am not sure about any of the songs names, but can tell you it did not matter. The magic was in the setlist as whole! The songs never stopped. Each one would flow right into the next without even the slightest moment to breathe. The band performed everything perfectly and the crowd was giving them so much love back that the energy never dropped.

One of my concerns going to see the band for the first time was that they had recently parted ways with their lighting designer Saxton, who has enough buzz in his own right. I will say that I was not let down in the least bit by their new guy. The light show for this concert was spectacular. One the most interesting aspect about the light show was the fact that the band remained in the darkness, as not to single out any one member but only accentuate the music as a whole. They also used a very sophisticated back lit LED type screen, which took up the entire stage behind the band and project patterns/images at the crowd. It truly created a visionary expression that was as mesmerizing to look at as the music was to hear.

Again, like Telepath, STS9 was using laptops and sequencers as integral part of their performance and it worked so beautifully. Their stage setup was also one of the most brilliant and extremely well thought out uses of space on stage I have experienced. For some reason it truly enhanced the spaceship motif to me. A friend and me quickly realized that at 10:30pm, after 1.5 hours of nonstop playing, that the band was not going to take a set break. With The Brown Theatre being located directly under the high class Brown Hotel, we came to the conclusion there must be a strict curfew and sure enough at 11pm the band left the stage only to return for probably a 30 minute encore. I later found out through a friend that the band has actually changed their fall performances to include just one large set with a big encore. The show ended with a very smooth soft piece which was the perfect night cap.

Once it was all said and done the energy was still pumping through everyone’s veins like a freight train, so we naturally dipped into a house party packed full of fellow concert goers, then after an intimate dance party back at a friends apartment I finally made my way into bed at 3am.

It was an amazing night with amazing friends. I am already thinking that it seems like a perfect idea to catch the band on their New Years run in Denver Colorado. If you have not heard STS9 or Telepath check them out now, and more importantly go see them live!

7 Years of Droid Behavior | Interface 29

Over the course of seven years, Droid Behavior has played major a role in the architecture of nightlife and music in LA and beyond. Droid events have a reputation of being a full sensory experience of surging soundtracks—designed and performed by some of the best talents in their field—combined with stunning visual and art installations that aim to completely engulf the audience.
.
Earlier today Droid Behaviour sent me a link to a promo video which they describe as a “compilation of sorts from our collective music career over the last 7 years”.  As you can tell from the video they know how to throw a good underground party, be it on the beach or in a dark warehouse. In fact, they throw the sort of parties you should make a point of trying to get to.
.
So, on Saturday, October 17th you have your chance as Droid Behavior celebrates their seven year anniversary with Interface 29. The event will feature Germany’s Chris Liebing (his first Los Angeles appearance in ten years), Kid 606 and a handful of other talents complemented by original light installations and a full bodied sound system. Interface 29 will take place in a undisclosed venue in Downtown Los Angeles whose location will be revealed the day of the event to ensure its exclusivity. rv_cast 011 Mixed by Sam Gracie

rv_cast 011 Mixed by Sam Gracie | Resonant Vibes PodcastThis week I’ve put together a slightly longer podcast than usual which runs for about 1 h 26 mins and it’s a DJ mix recorded with a single take. It starts off housey and groovy before getting deep and techy. Then it goes into a bit of techno before wrapping up with some deeper stuff again. I really enjoyed mixing it as I was able to combine tunes that work really well in a club alongside some others that I might not get away with playing out. What’s more, it’s been a few weeks since my last mix for the podcast which means I had a great selection of new tunes to use.

2020Soundsystem: Exclusive Resonant Vibes Interview

2020Soundsystem
.
Falling is the second album from 2020Soundsystem, one of, if not the band to see if you’re looking for a true amalgamation of electronica and live instrumentation. 2020Vision label boss Ralph Lawson and company (Danny Ward, Fernando Pulichino and Julian Sanz) follow their first and well-received release No Order with a funky, cohesive statement. The “sophomore slump” has clearly skipped the boys from Leeds. They will be touring this fall to support the album, and are even playing some US dates. I’m going to try to make it to the Chicago show, so if you’re going to be there, let me know and we’ll get together and make new friends. If you’d like some mood music while you’re reading the interview, check out the mix here for a taste of the 2020Vision sound.
.
Q: From a performance perspective, what was the most difficult aspect of integrating live instruments with the decks? When you were starting 2020Soundsystem, did the DJing need to become looser, did the instrumentation need to become tighter, or did you need to meet in the middle?
.
A: The hardest thing to integrate live musicians is always getting the sound right. We have got much better over the years but we have had some soul destroying sound-checks. We often can’t afford to travel with our own engineer so we are at the mercy of what the venue provides. When we first started it was a unique set up, now soundguys are becoming more accustomed to bands with DJs but they always take a lot of convincing about how we want to do it. If we can all hear clearly on stage and the monitoring is tight we can play so much better. As for the second part to your question it is for sure that the DJ-ing has to be super tight. Musicians are only human and you don’t want to lose that dynamic from the mix so it’s up to the DJ to be rock solid.
.
Q: Did/do you have to make any special arrangements to accommodate turntables on stage with lots of loud instruments to prevent everything turning into a big ball of feedback (or any number of other undesirable acoustic phenomena)?
.
A: I started out using turntables and you are right it was really tough dealing with jumping needles and feedback but I moved to Ableton Live around 2004 so we haven’t had those issues since then.
.
Q: Do you have any fun stories about confused soundmen trying to handle your set up?
.
A: Haha I hadn’t read this one until I already answered above. Our record soundcheck was in Barcelona when they took 9 hours to set us up – it really isn’t that hard. I don’t find them funny I nearly start crying.
.
Q: When you started booking 2020Soundsystem gigs, did you meet any resistance because you weren’t a clear-cut “band” or “DJ”, or at that point had you made enough inroads that it wasn’t an issue?
.
A: Yes we have had it both ways. At first the indie kids saw a DJ and turned their noses up and the (more…)

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 10th of October 2009

10-10-09 Top 10
It’s 9:30 on a Saturday night, and it’s time to relax. Have a good weekend.
.
1. Lush Print (Original Mix)Andy HartEtoka Records. It could just be me, but I’m usually drawn to keys that sound like this.
.
2. Final Call (Matthias Vogt Remix)Drei Farben HousePolytone. Final Call EP is one of my favorite all-around records this week.
.
3. Institue of Shadow (Original Mix)Thomas MullerBPitch Control. I like this track because of all the things happening in the low to low-mid range. Interesting contrast between the very rigid stabs and the smooth bass.
.
4. Fenske (Jan van Lier Remix)Tyler HamptonAudio Logic Recordings. There are songs that take some time to get you going. There are also songs like Fenske that make it happen – immediately.
.
5. Mellow Dramatic (Komytea Remix)Maxi ValvonamicroCastle Music. The 4 versions of the title track are varied enough that there should be at least one for nearly everybody.
.
6. The Boost (Original Mix)Brendon MoellerConnaisseur Recordings. I’m on a pretty healthy Brendon Moeller kick. A few mixes of his have been spending significant time in my headphones. The Boost could be my favorite track of the week. I’m pretty sure I heard a man say fiddlesticks.
.
7. Avid Hustler (Original Mix)John Selway & Dave TurovCSM. Since the interview I did with Christian Smith I’ve been on the lookout for anything from John Selway.
.
8. Câlin calé (Original)Joris DelacroixWohlab. My description of this would fall short. Give them a listen.
.
9. Dajarra (Worakls Remix) Steve NocerinoAirbus Recordings. This is a slow builder.
.
10. Nedenumit (Original Mix)Posh 111Barraca. As I was putting the tracks together for the mix (using headphones at time) this one was playing and Sam stopped me to ask if I had heard the El Prologo Remixes Pt 1.1. Barraca is making some good moves.
