Gadi Mizrahi of Wolf + Lamb: RV Interview

gadi_interview

Seth: (After some chitchat) Want to get down to it and jump to interview mode?

Gadi Mizrahi: Sure.

Seth: Let’s start by talking a little about the reason we’re chatting. I loved your set/podcast from Bar 13 WLP 90. Can you tell me about what was going on that night?

Gadi: It was a sunset party on a roof in Manhattan.

Seth: What was the crowd like that night?

Gadi: The usual W+L following, with some city folk. Funny story… I followed someone who was playing tech-house which is usually the story. So when I start playing really SLOW, the crowd usually feels strange for a few minutes but that’s kinda my whole MO – take people for a ride.

Seth: So in this instance, Wicked Game was setting the mood and acting a bit like a palate cleanser? Hitting the resest button?

Gadi: EXACTLY the term i use as well. I do that every time I DJ. Some people really appreciate it, some don’t.

Seth: Do you pick your first track based on where the other DJ has been or where you’re headed for the night?

Gadi: I usually try to take in the city I’m in and the crowd I’m playing for and what the crowd has been reacting to (from the previous dj’s). I think the first 2-3 tracks are the most important to set a different tone and usually those are the ones on my mind the 2-3 hours leading to my set time.

Seth: And after that I would assume, especially based on the night in question, everything pretty much falls into place. Once you’re in the pocket, do you steer, does the crowd steer you, or is it a combination? Does it depend on the crowd?

Gadi: Yeah, i start off steering them, then I take cues from the crowd

Seth: Some DJs/producers/labels ect. seem to think only in terms of “electronic or not electronic”. You don’t strike me as one of those people. What are some of your favorite bands/artists?

Gadi: I’m really into J Dilla. Ever since my girlfriend made that podcast WLP091 I’ve been getting super inspired by that sound. I’ve been trying to make that type of shit lately…just to try something new

Seth: Any other influences creeping in or are you pretty focused right now?

Gadi: This band called “Electric Wire Hussle” just came out with an R&B type funk album that’s off the meter.

Seth: Nice. I’ll have to check into that.

Gadi: I live in Williamsburg, the hub of indie rock but i never hear anything from that genre that blows my mind…strange. I mean, I love the simplicity (more…)

2009 Year in Review – Seth’s Favorite Mixes

When I started down the 2009 recap path, I knew I wanted to do tracks and mixes. I thought about artists, labels, cover art, track titles, most obscure film stars used in track titles, best use of scantly clad women… you get the picture. At the end of the day, I spend the most time listening to tracks and mixes, and those are the areas on which I decided to focus. As with my 2009 tracks post, this isn’t a “best of” list. These are the mixes that knocked me out the most and spent the most time pushing that little bar across the top of iTunes. The mixes appear in no particular order.
.

patrice_and_nunoI have to start with this one as I’ve yet to get my hands on a mix from Mr. Baumel that I haven’t liked. I usually like them a great deal. This is a live set from Patrice and Nuno (dos Santos) recorded in Amsterdam on the first of August, 2009. I asked Pat for a tracklist, to which he replied, “I don’t have a tracklist for the mix, it’s a live mix, some of the records are Nuno’s and i don’t know all of them.” The continuity of this mix is outrageous, and I can imagine mixes of similar quality (when you’re fortunate enough to find one) being scrutinized and prepared for weeks. The fact that half of the outfit isn’t even sure what records were played indicates that this was not gone over with a fine-tooth comb before hand, which makes it all the more impressive. I think these are two DJs who have a wide range of tastes, a depth of knowledge about music, and the ability to work together to the extent that real energy and improvisation are no strangers to their sets. As your attorney, I advise you to listen to anything these two have put out.

heidi_and_sethAs luck would have it, Heidi and Seth Troxler both put out some of my favorite mixes of the year so the picture to your right works perfectly for this post. As Heidi is on top, we’ll start with her In New DJs We Trust show from the first of May 2009. I’m a big fan of INDWT and I listen to the show each month, so this was not an easy decision to make. I knew one of her shows was going to be on the list, but which one??? Well, this one. The tracklist is great, and a guest mix from Damian Lazarus… Come on. This mix has Visionquest, Jamie Jones, the first track in Lazarus’ set is ridiculous, and he also throws in a song that has a little nod to Nick Cave. All in all, a great two hours of music.

And now, our friend Mr. Troxler, who, with a little help from Heidi, is putting a new spin on the concept of tenting. I’ve heard several of Seth’s shows from the past year, but my favorite is his set from NYC’s Electric Zoo. The recording I have is not of the best quality and there are a few obvious technical glitches, but none of it detracts from the fun, grooving feel of this set. He had a few hours early in the day, and he used them well. I still listen to this set at least once every week or so, and I would probably listen to it more often if I didn’t dedicate the majority of my listening time to things related to the site. The man can cover some sonic ground and keep the wheels on the cart. For those of you who haven’t heard the mix, I won’t ruin it for you. Know that there are great songs and one big surprise around the 1 hour 20 minute mark. I was surprised anyway. In an awesome “holy shit, that’s…!” kind of way.

gadiNext on the list, Gadi Mizrahi’s rooftop set from Bar 13 in Manhattan which turned into W+L Podcast 90. This one gets your attention from the start. I caught up with Gadi to talk about this set, but it turned into a full-blown interview, and I’ve decided to publish it soon as a separate post. For our purposes, I’ll just talk about the mix. It’s deep and sexy and full of soul. There you go.

“The music that inspires the visuals of Spectral designer, Michael Cina.  An all-vinyl mix of Spectral/Ghostly tracks.” This bit of information pulled from the mix description in iTunes is pretty much the only thing I can find about my next pick: GhostlyCast #25: Michael Cina – Waves of Seeing. I’ve found a wealth of information about Michael and his accomplishments as an artist and designer. However, I’ve turned up little (more…)

2009 Year in Review – Seth’s Favorite Tracks

2009_Favorites

This isn’t a “Best of 2009″ list. These are the tracks that I liked the most from last year. I didn’t want to try to make the perfect all-encompassing irrefutably correct list. I don’t think they exist. I decided to cut the mix in to two parts. The first is more laid back and has a fuller sound. The second; less going on and a bit more up tempo. Achtung! This post is longer than the others I write that include mixes. This isn’t a ploy to try to make you click to read the rest of it. I promise. Just trying to conserve real estate for my colleagues. Instead of clicking through to see the whole thing, I suggest you do whatever your OS requires to pop it out into another window so you can stream the mixes while going about your internet-based business, or download them so you don’t have to worry about keeping that window open. I hate accidentally closing a window that’s streaming music mid-mix.

Part 1:

1. Love In Looxor (Original Mix)KadebostanFreude Am Tanzen. In the spirit of honesty (I’m not ready for full transparency yet, but I fear it is inevitable) the week this track was released, a few tracks were most likely bumped so I could make a halfway decent go at making a coherent mix. Turns out, I didn’t have time to do a mix. Sorry guys from that week. Looxor is all about the space – perfect use.

2. Spice Market (Original Mix) - Joel Mull and Sean PalmRailyard Recordings. I spent a good deal of time listening to this album when it came out. A lot of good material was there, but this was always my favorite.

3. Closer (Original Mix)Nicolas StefanKompakt Extra. Ahhh… Kompakt.

4. Landscapes (Tim Paris Remix)IdiomaMarketing. Another instance of an album that made it hard to pick a favorite. Though I’m still trying to reconcile good music from “Shit Robot”… the Shit Robot remix is fantastic too.

5. Aaron (Original Mix)Paul KalkbrennerBPitch Control. The first of many tracks from BPitch that I liked this year. The synths in this song…. Damn… I’m always happy when melodic is good and not cheesy. Melody gets a bum rap. Use it for good and not evil.

6. Rabbit Hole (Facundo Romano Dub)Marcelo VasamiKansak Recordings. Again, use of melody. Rabbit Hole rolls along but keeps you honest with some funky synth stabs.

7. Colour Of Love (Derek Howell Remix)SoulfinderOutside the Box Music. Colour of Love took me to Bowie-land and I’m always ok with that, (more…)

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 28th of December 2009

12-28-09 Top 10

This will be my last top 10 of 2009. There are some great tracks coming out to wrap up 2009, and I’m already seeing some things that I’m certain will make the cut in ‘10. Have a wonderful new year!

1. Druckpegel (Original Mix)Mikdat vs. AfriloungeKassette. Druckpegel just works for me. Straight ahead and plays well with others.

2. Perfect Fever (Original Mix)Jota WagnerBeat Code. Perfect Fever is a fun one. I enjoy the contrast between the whimsical feel of the lead synth line and its somewhat gritty tonality.

3. The Right Time (Original Mix)Mark HenningHypercolour. Hands down my favorite of the week. Rick James’ crazy ass talking about, believe it or not, kinky women combined with great production by Mark Henning. I wouldn’t change a thing about this track.

4. Murex (Phonogenic Remix)Erich BogatzkyDieb Audio. It’s those synths I’m always on about… again. I can’t help it.

5. Out Run (Original Mix)Lucio AquilinaHideout. Talk about smooth…

6. Beauty On Water (Original Mix)Gaspard De La Vega & JeniusPerplex. It’s the synths again, though this time around they’re a bit more in your face.

7. Nuit Blanche (Original Mix)Jay SustainBWG Records. Just this man’s opinion, but Nuit Blanche is the best track from BWG I’ve heard in a long time. Definitely give it a listen.

8. Cochlea (From Karaoke To Stardom Remix)Kleinschmager AudioDekadent Schallplatten. Dekadent is a new label to RV and a welcomed addition. What a great release.

9. Wallpaper (Original Mix)SQLMicrotonal Records. SQL has been seeing a good deal of action on the blog and in the shop. Not at all surprising…

10. Rat (Original Mix)Michele FaneschiTravel Records. I wasn’t familiar with Travel Records until I heard Rat. They’re on the Radar.

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 19th of December 2009

12-19-09 Top 10

We’ve had our hands more than full at RV over the past weeks, and these posts have been somewhat skimpy as a result. This week, I carved out the time to put the mix together. I think it’s nice to be able to listen to the music as the post is being read. Granted, it probably shouldn’t take 30 minutes to read it, but that’s what tabs are for. And speaking of the mix, I could have carved out a little more time to do it, so you’ll have to forgive a few less than smooth transitions.

1. Promised Land (NTFO Remix)MoonbeamBeef Records. What a stellar release. The remixes are all unique and range from around 122 to 130 BPM. Each of these would fit into so many sets…

2. Hafenstrasse (Original Mix)Gorge & Nick CurlySystematic. This baby is funky.

3. This Feeling (Steve Bug Remix)RibnMild Pitch. It’s probably no surprise that Steve Bug is cranking out some quality music.

4. Human League (Original Mix)Sendos FueraTokyo Red Recordings. I’m clearly hooked on this label. I haven’t gone back to count how many of their tracks have been featured in these posts, but looking at all the releases from Tokyo Red, I saw lots of familiar covers. Great track!

5. Quantum Physics (Original Mix)Gavin HerlihyResopal Schallware. Ahh, Resopal Schallware. Just weird enough to walk the line between interesting and ridiculous.

6. Drama Society (Almodrama)Drama Society, Vladislav DelayDrama Society. This is the first release on Drama Society. Good start.

7. Deconstructed (Original Mix)Alex & FilipMirabilis Records. Mirabilis is another label that continues to put out consistently good music. The latest from Alex & Filip is no exception. Deconstructed builds and builds and could destroy a dancefloor.

8. Get Up And Lie (Original Mix)Brwn ShoesMy Little Dog. A track from My Little Dog almost made the list last week, but this week, Get Up and Lie was an easy choice.

9. Backroom (Original Mix)DeepchildTrapez. As if I needed another reason to love Trapez… Also, there’s a track on this release called Death Panel My Ass Ms Palin.

10. It is L8 (Original Mix)LeRon & Yves EauxLittle Mountain Recordings. Yep.

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 13th of December 2009

12-13-09 Top 10

1. We met at the Party (Original Mix)Ricardo TobarTraum Schallplatten. I’ve found that with electronic music, the titles of songs rarely reflect the mood of the song. Honestly, I think most of them are arbitrarily chosen. I’m always pleased to find one that fits (especially when it’s a good song).

2. Cake (Sheehan & Clausen Sweet Chocolate Remix)Matthew BurtonElite Records. The congas/bongos have something weird going on here, and I like it.

3. Connection (Kiki’s Vinyl Remix)AGF / DelayBPitch Control. Kiki. Come on. This guy can’t put a foot wrong.

4. Tabla Rehab (Original)SpoonkatUrbansound Records. Big bass, big beats, and some fun bullhorn gibberish.

5. First Journey (Original Mix)Lain ChristophSintope Digital. First Journey eases back into the pocket and grooves.

6. 61 Paths to Find ur Lover (Original Mix)Till Von Sein - Dirt Crew Recordings. Despite the bastardization of the English language, I can’t help but like this song. I hope that when you find “ur” lover, he or she smacks you, you start typing “your” in emails and text messages, and you live happily ever after.

7. Cuidado Con El Perro (Original Mix)HoneyeatersAlma Soul Music. Ohh the bass. The way it rolls – it makes me think of Dragnet on acid.

8. Sabbat (Original Mix)FlowBeat Code. Wild indeed….

9. Russian Fisherman (Citzen Kain & Phuture Traxx Remix)Irregular Synth & Drifting BeatPanormus Music. Straight up sweet sweet techno.

10. Big City Abyss (Original Mix)Thor De Force Nublu Records. This is big brassy track but the melody isn’t lost.

Seth’s Picks of the Week – 28th of November 2009

11-28-09 Top 10

You’ll notice that this is a few days late. I decided to name the post with last week’s date just to keep things clear. No stealing the thunder of this week’s tracks. Also, you’ll notice that there is no mix with this post. For those of you who listen to it – I’m sorry. You’ll just have to go to the shop and listen to them individually. :)

1. Starslider (Original Mix)KikiBPitch Control.

2. Departure (Original Mix)Robert DietzCécille Numbers.

Seth’s Picks of the Week 21st of November 2009

11-21-09 Top 10

If you happen to follow some of the label links below, you’ll find that many of them only have a handful of releases. This could be attributed to a release from a new label, but more than likely, is because it is some of the first content to arrive from one of the many new labels we’ve added to the shop. If that’s the case, keep an eye out. We’ll have a steady stream of back catalog coming so you can dig back for the goodies the label has already released, and grab the new stuff as soon as it comes out.

1. Cepheid (Chloe Harris Remix)Liz CirelliMirabilis Records. This is a no brainer for me. I always seem to go for Mirabilis, and I’ve been known to enjoy some Chloe Harris as well.

2. One Mode (Original Mix)MidaveTokyo Red Recordings. Tokyo Red has been getting me lately. I enjoy a label that has an identity, but their releases don’t seem to be dictated by some sort of label mantra. Their artists seem to have some room to breathe and are well chosen, which can only help make the music better.

3. Flush (Original Mix)SonodabGalaktika Records. Do yourself a favor and listen to the whole release.

4. Shponggg (Original Mix)Latscho PalmePlattenbau Music. Shpongg must mean rolling waves in a language with which I am unfamiliar.

5. A Summer Melody (Remute Remix)Paul SchalRemuted. Remute has issued only two releases, but I like them both and look forward to number three.

6. Abstract Looper (Original Mix)Matthias SpringerPunkt vor Strich Recordings. Abstract Looper is the perfect example of the type of song I like to hear when I’m in a laid-back mood, or towards the end of the night. It definitely grooves, but it doesn’t club you over the head.

7. Escape (Robin Hirte Summer Mix)Robbie RiveraParquet Recordings. This remix of the Robbie Rivera track is excellent. Drop this one and it’s on. 128 BPM of body moving techno.

8. Plankton (Matan Caspi and Eddy Good Remix)Muzikjunki & Marco Den HeldWazzup? Records. This particular remix of Plankton has good energy and melody without being over the top.

9. Never Forever (Marko Zavala Remix)SharkatronicAnimal Play Minimal. This one gets a bit nasty…

10. Goldbrokat (Donato Dozzy Techno Remix)Cio D’orPrologue. One of my favorite releases of the week.

RV Exclusive Prerelease and Chart from Tony Craig!

Tony CraigAs you know, we’ve been working tirelessly to simultaneously improve our new site and to make sure we’re back up to speed on everything we had to offer on our 1.0 site. One of the things that has been missing since RV 2.0 made it out into the water… exclusives. Thanks to Dublin Xpress Recordings, we’re putting the wheels back on the exclusive cart. On the 23rd of November, we will be the only outlet for Tony Craig’s Dog Head release. I’ve been listening to it over the past few weeks, and I think you’ll be as pleased with these tracks as I have been. This is not one of those releases that has a decent original and a host of throwaway filler remixes. Mr. Craig’s original is spot on techno. The solid sparse beats lay down the foundation, and are complimented by several well-placed builds and transitions. My favorite remix is the Cricky Lyttle cut, which has major crowd-pummeling potential.
.
Tony was kind enough to send us a chart of his top 10 tracks of the moment. This should give you a good idea of where he’s coming from. (I know, a preposition)
