David Guetta’s “Sexy Chick” – Dance Music at My Gym?

At my gym (where I found myself pretty much everyday last year), they keep the radio set on a local station that plays a ceaseless stream of top-20 commercial tunes, on repeat. I usually bring my headphones to spare my ears the anguish of the full-frontal radio candy assault. However, I occasionally forget my headphones or don’t use them (because I failed to charge my iPod battery or something like that). On the occasions where I’m subjected to the “gym songs,” I have to fight against a small part of myself…a part of me that starts wondering, “Why do the masses spend their time listening to this rubbish when there’s an endless supply of incredible, original music coming out every week?” I actually told one of the guys who works at the gym that I was going to start wearing a t-shirt that says, “Why are the same whack-ass tunes always playing at this gym?” …of course, I realize these thoughts are not coming from a good place in me; it’s just hard to suppress them sometimes. Fortunately, I can vent about this to you, my fellow lovers of real, quality tunes ;)
.
In addition to just wanting to vent a bit, I mention all of the above to describe the context in which I heard David Guetta’s song “Sexy Chick” (real title, “Sexy Bitch”), featuring Akon. I started hearing this song in the gym, and it struck me because it’s dance music (though the folks at my gym don’t realize it). (You can check out the video for the song below.)

My reaction to hearing this song was one of mixed feelings. On the one hand, it was just another gym song in my mind. On the other hand, I was happy to hear dance music being foisted upon the masses. In writing this post, I ended up listening to the song a few times, and my final take on it is that I’m cool with it ;) I think it’s good overall to have dance music (in whatever form) reaching stations like the one my gym plays.
.
On a slightly different note, I’ve always found it interesting to observe and study the evolution of musical forms…jazz, classical music, hip hop, and dance music. While hip hop and pop still seem to have a stronghold on the American psyche at the moment, dance music is certainly making an impact on these genres in interesting ways…often in subtle ways that the masses are missing.

LovEvolution 2009, San Francisco – Recap (Part 1) – Simply Amazing!

San Francisco LovEvolution | Resonant Vibes
I’m not even sure where to start in describing the LovEvolution 2009 festival that took place in San Francisco over the weekend. If I had to sum up my thoughts, I would say it was “Simply Amazing”!

The experience of being at this event was so rich that I’m not going to try to condense it into one post; I’m going to share it in two recaps. (Of course, I should also mention that we’ve got exclusive LovEvolution video and photos coming soon to our blog!)

Sam and I got to San Francisco on Friday evening, just in time to grab dinner and head over to the listed Presents Tyrant party (featuring Lee Burridge and Craig Richards). This was a great way to start the weekend. The tunes were killer, and the crowd’s energy was super positive! (We’ll have a photo gallery from this event for you in the next day or so.)

After wrapping up a fairly late night at the Tyrant party, Sam and I headed back to the hotel for what seemed more like a nap than a real night’s sleep. Before I knew it, my alarm was going off, and we were hustling to get downtown to check in for the LovEvolution parade. As we made our way downtown, we started seeing other partygoers. The weather was shaping up nicely, and you could sense that something big was about to happen.

We got our media credentials and then headed to the listed float. More and more people kept showing up to the area where the floats were parked, and you could feel this strong sense of anticipation and excitement: we were all ready to get on the floats and get the party going!

Eventually, we all got on our respective floats, and the parade got started. As the listed float began its procession, we were being blessed with a barrage of pounding, underground beats being played by DJ Dory! (We’ve got video of this.) I can’t say enough good things about Dory’s DJ-ing; she’s controlled and technically sound, but also not afraid to get dirty!

As we made our way through the streets of San Francisco, I felt like I was in heaven. The sun was shining brightly…the air was the perfect temperature…and I was surrounded by high quality dance music and thousands of people who were lost with me in the tunes! It just doesn’t get much better than that!

As the listed float kept making its way through the streets, the crowd became thicker and thicker. The girls were hot, confidently showing off in their revealing party outfits, feeling emboldened by the music. Everywhere you turned, everybody was getting down! All races and ethnicities, all sexual orientations, all ages, both genders – just a massive crowd of people united by a shared love for quality dance music!

At some point in the procession, I looked over at the DJ booth and saw Dory handing the reins to none other than Naveen G! I knew we were in for a treat. Naveen stepped up in a major way, as he always does, delivering his own unique ilk of proggy, techy, dark, make-you-lose-your-mind kinda tunes! I remember a particular epic build up that Naveen worked into his set…when the beat dropped, I watched one guy surrender to it and start following our float, led uncontrollably by the speakers :)

As Naveen kept jamming out, we were getting nearer to our stopping point at the Civic Center. The crowd was getting even wilder; I saw people holding on to street posts and dancing, basically losing their minds as we rode past. At some point before we reached the Civic Center, I hopped off the float so I could mingle with the crowd, which (needless to say) made for a very interesting experience…

To Be Continued in Recap (Part 2)…

Livetronica!

.

Let me first briefly introduce myself. My name is John Grisanti or “The GRIZZ” as I am known around the office thanks to Eddie B’s love for nicknaming. I am the new “Intern” at Resonant Vibes. I could be considered a “jam band” fanatic by most people, as I see an average of 65 live shows a year and have been known to follow around a certain band named Umphrey’s McGee. I am, however, still a noob when it comes to Electronic Dance Music, but Sam and Eddie are trying to change that :) !

The reason I am writing a blog post today is to give the RV community a glimpse into the biggest trend in my scene (jam band) since its creation back in the 60’s. This trend is something I have been watching unfold over the past several years now, and it has all but taken over the jam band culture.

The trend/style has been dubbed “Livetronica”!

Arguably the fastest moving phenomena in the festival/jam circuit, “Livetronica” was by most fans’ accounts started by The Disco Biscuits around 1996. The idea is simple, take live instruments like bass, drums, guitar, and piano, and create electronic dance music. For the longest time bands in the jam scene were focused on having extended periods of two/three chord jams while trading off solos and singing goofy lyrics. Now a large part of the community is shifting to completely instrumental arrangements with no one member playing above any other, but instead the entire band plays almost to a mood or pulse. The trend has become so electronically oriented now that many of these bands, especially Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9), have become just as known for playing live instruments as they are for playing complete DJ/PA shows in which all the members relinquish their instruments for laptops and mixing decks.

Apart from the way the jam community dresses and smells :) , they seem to want the same thing the dance music community wants – a kick ass party with non stop grooving tunes to keep that body moving. There are some very key similarities to note about both scenes.

1. The songs usually flow into one another with out much or any pauses just like a good electronic mix.
2. The light show is often just as important and intense to the crowd as the music itself.
3. The show/party always starts late and never ends early (after party after party)

This movement should not be taken lightly or viewed as a FAD. Quite the contrary. Just one year ago STS9, one of the premier “livetronica” bands, headlined a two night run at the famous 9,000+ capacity Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and then played there again this July with DJ Pretty Lights as the opening act! The show was preceded and followed by various raging parties and late night concerts all around Denver! The Disco Biscuits, at the same venue, put together a mini 2 day festival called Bisco Inferno in which Paul Oakenfold played along side “livetronica” bands – Lotus, The New Deal and fellow DJs Z-Trip & RJD2. On top of that, about a month ago, The Disco Biscuits held their 8th annual Camp Bisco in New York. The 3 day festival was the perfect marriage between the jam band and dance music scenes. Just a few of the artist including – STS9, Chromeo, EOTO, Pretty Lights, and Shpongle!

With all of this happening it is hard to deny that dance music is one the biggest trends in music today. It is not just a style that has evolved in its own right, but one that has deeply re-shaped other musical genres. Below is a list of some of the leaders in the “livetronica” movement. It should be noted that many of these artist don’t consider themselves to be Jam Bands but the fact is that this is the community which has embraced them and where they came from.

The Disco Biscuits
Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9)
Lotus
The New Deal
EOTO
Future Rock
Pnuma Trio
The Motet ( These guys are shifting into livetronica and Mr. Gracie actually enjoys them ;) )

If any of our readers will be in Louisville on October 14th, Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9)”>STS9 is playing the Brown Theatre. I highly recommend you check out this band as they have quickly become one of the most popular and influential bands in the “Livetronica” scene. I for one will be in attendance dancing my ass off 6th row center! It will be a show not to miss. As they say in my community these guys bring the “UNTZ”.
