Exclusive Audio Interview with Alex B from The Pnuma Trio

.

Resonant Vibes is very excited to give our readers an exclusive audio interview with Alex B, bass player and producer, for the band The Pnuma Trio. (Click the play button below to have a listen)

I first mentioned The Pnuma Trio to the Resonant Vibes community back in my original Livetronica blog post. The band formed in Memphis Tennessee around 2004 and moved to Boulder Colorado where they now are proud to call STS9’s super hot indie label, 1320 Records, home. The trio is comprised of Alex Botwin on Bass, Ben Hazelgrove on Keys, and Lane Shaw on Drums. They consider themselves to be an electronic band who uses live instrumentation to create forward thinking compositions with a high energy electro feel! Download a free live show of the band performing at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado by going to The Pnuma Trio’s profile page in the Resonant Vibes Network .

Alex B is also a superb DJ, who is heavily involved with the Electronic Music Scene when he is not on the road with The Pnuma Trio. He has made quite a reputation on the live scene for his deep glitch-informed hip-hop sound and recently released a mix called “Brian Food” for Flying Lotus on the Brainfeeder record label which can be downloaded for free right HERE. Also check out several other mixes & tracks by going to Alex B’s profile page in the Resonant Vibes Network.

The Pnuma Trio is a powerful leader in the live electronic movement. They are doing everything they can to bring Electronic Music to the masses by merging the rock/jam culture with that of the DJ club scene. Check out both The Pnuma Trio and Alex B on tour right now!

Morgan May – First Winner of the RV Network DJ Competition

Morgan May Electronic Music DJ
We’ve already announced Morgan May as the first winner of the RV network DJ competition, and now it’s time to give him a duly earned in-depth profile here on our blog.
.
As I write this post, Morgan’s winning mix – @ Twisted Modelf*cker 06 April 2009 – has received 78 thumbs up ratings! It’s still the highest rated mix in our network, and we have nearly 300 mixes posted. His mix has gotten more positive feedback than other mixes that were submitted by well-known DJs. My hat is definitely off to him!
.
Over the past couple weeks, our team has had the opportunity to exchange emails with Morgan. We asked him some general questions, and I’ve been listening to his music to get a better feel for him as a person and an artist.
.
Morgan was born in the U.S.S.R. (He told us that the country’s dissolution reminds him that nothing lasts forever.) He lives in The Netherlands now, but he’s also lived in Austria, Russia, and the United States at other points in his life.
.
Morgan has been an electronic music fan for over 15 years. He started DJ-ing after visiting a friend in Florida who had a local following of people. This friend had a cool spot that he could turn into a club, and his performance made a positive impression on Morgan. In 2000, Morgan decided to embark on his own (more…)

RV Catches Up with Miami Veteran Oscar G

og580x388

Oscar G, the Miami-based DJ and producer has been a staple of the house scene for the better part of the last two decades. He has traveled the world as a DJ, and been at the helm of remixes for Madonna, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Donna Summer, and Jennifer Lopez.  He was kind enough to fill us in on life as an mover and shaker, and also give us some insight into his recently released 3 disc (2 CD / 1 DVD) offering on Nervous Records, “DJ“.

Q: When you set out to make “DJ”, was there anything you wanted to accomplish that you felt you hadn’t before?

A: I was making an attempt to define what a “DJ” is today. Producer, remixer, performer, songwriter – artist. There are many layers to what I do and many times it is difficult to bring those things together. This project allowed me to flex all of those muscles in what I hope is one cohesive album. I feel DJs, although increasingly popular, continue to have to legitimize themselves as artists / musicians. My hope is that this project continues to push that idea forward.

Q: The two audio CDs of DJ have distinct feels. What is different about the way you approach a night in a club as opposed to sitting down to work on production?

A: The biggest difference is your starting point. In the studio, you begin with a blank canvas. You are going based on an idea or feeling, and try to get those ideas to translate into music. You can experiment with sounds, lyrics, chords, patterns, notes, etc. Preparing for a live set is a whole different world, you are mostly working with finished pieces of music. You are a music selector and trying to tell a story within your set. You are also making choices based on the audience and how they react. It is a performance. I hope this project is an example of how these two worlds are connected when you are a “DJ”.

Q: The press release for “DJ” mentions that you recently made the switch from analog to digital equipment. What were your go-to pieces of gear before and with what have you replaced them?

A: I wouldn’t say I replaced them because I am always open to new sounds, analog or digital. I did recently begin working in the digital realm with Logic Pro and Pro Tools. I like the fact that it gives you more flexibility and I love the fact that I don’t have a million cables to deal with. I am currently building a room (more…)

RV Network Winners – Congrats Morgan May and DJ Afterlight!

One of the most exciting features of the RV 2.0 website is our recurring network competition. In just over a month, hundreds of tracks and mixes have been uploaded to our network, and the RV community has been reviewing and rating them. Our policy is to give rewards out every few weeks to the DJ and producer who upload the most popular mix and track. The first decision date was May 1st (last Friday), and we’re ready now to declare the first network competition winners…
.
Our winning DJ is Morgan May for his mix @ Twisted Modelf*cker 06 April 2009, which has racked up nearly 70 thumbs up ratings. The mix has a lot of energy, and it weaves its way through a sequence of trance and progressive tracks, maintaining a peak hour dance floor feel. I’ll be writing more about Morgan and his mix over the next few days.
.
Now, turning to our network tracks, I want to announce that DJ Afterlight is our winning producer for his track titled, “Get in to It.” This track has gotten 24 thumbs up ratings, and it has a broken beat with hints of hardcore. It’s also stirred up a string of positive comments. You’ll definitely be seeing and hearing more about “Get in to It” in the near future.
.
Now that we’ve announced them as winners, I want to say “CONGRATULATIONS” to Morgan May and DJ Afterlight on behalf of the RV team!
.
In addition to congratulating our first network competition winners here, I want to write a bit about the significance of the competition in our eyes… (more…)
