The fourteenth installment of the rv podcast comes courtesy of British techno pioneer Billy Nasty.

In the business for 20 years Billy’s early beginnings were in London’s acid house scene before growing into the huge global following he enjoys today. With his combination of experience and hunger for new music it’s made him one of the industry’s most enduring and in-demand DJs.

As a DJ he came from a rare groove and funk background before making his first forays into house with his residency at The Brain Club in London. At that time he was also working at the London record store Zoom, which gave him the chance to soak up everything from American house and techno to the emerging UK progressive sound and European trance.

Quickly making an impact on the club world in 1993 he was asked to contribute the first volume of the seminal Journeys By DJs series – gaining him entry into the Guinness Book of Records for being the first DJ to produce a commercially available mix.

As the dance scene of the early-90s splintered into numerous subgenres Billy’s profile sky-rocketed, and by the mid-90s his productions started to enhance his reputation, thus ensuring him a place among the jet-setting elite of global DJs. It was around that time that he formed his own agency Theremin, and he was in part responsible for introducing the talents of household names like Adam Beyer, Marco Carola and Joel Mull to the world.

His label Tortured Records showed the development of his style into a harder, purer form of techno, and it quickly became one of the genre’s most influential and prominent imprints. Electrix Records followed in 2001, which became a place where Billy released more experimental techno and electro from artists including Umek, The Advent and Carl Finlow, until he shut it’s doors in 2006.

Billy has spent most of the 21^st century continuing to DJ but also regaining focus on his studio work. Recently he’s been collaborating with Gregor Tresher for labels including Datapunk, Terminal-M, and Crosstown Rebel’s Rebel1 subsidiary. He’s also been working on a new project with Keith Tenniswood — of Radioactiveman and Two Lone Swordsmen — which is set for release later this year. There’s not much to go on about the project but Billy’s suggested it’s a fresh direction that may surprise anyone who had him down as a pure techno artist.
