SG_picksHere we go then for the second mix of my of picks from the rv shop.

Plenty of good tunes hit the site this week. This mix features a bunch of groovy house, trippy tech house and slammin’ techno. There’s a cameo from a track that was released in 2006 but can you tell which one it is?
.
As usual I downloaded the tracks from rv, recorded a live set and then uploaded it to share on the blog. It’s slightly longer than my first mix, I hope you enjoy it.

Catching Up With Naveen G.

naveenRegular readers of the blog will know that last month Naveen G. did a guest episode for our rv_cast. It was a great mix and well worth a listen if you haven’t already. [You can check it out HERE.] Unfortunately I wasn’t able to catch up with Naveen in time to include a few interview questions with the post but I’m pleased to be able to share them with you now. He also sent over a brand new live mix for me to post which you can find after the questions…
.
What was the first track you produced that got a release? How important was that release to further your DJing career?
.
The first tracks I made were with Reason when it first came out. I spent a summer figuring out the basics and ended up with two tracks that I was reasonably happy with which I mailed out to a handful of places with some actually sending me responses. I then managed to pass Deep Dish a cd when they played gig at a tiny club in Chicago, well before they got to the status that they have now. I got an email back from Ali two days later that said he’d be road testing the tracks the rest of the month and soon after that, he signed both to Yoshitoshi. He then played Chicago a couple of months later and told me one of the tracks made it into Satoshi’s Nubreed CD. I couldn’t really have asked for a better setup for a first track. The tracks weren’t released under my own name, which is a completely different and much longer story, so it didnt do that much for my name recognition but it was good positive feedback to keep working on more tunes.
.
Are you still producing, and if so what’s coming up?
.
My DJ schedule has been fairly busy given how it gets squeezed in with the day job, so there’s been a significant slowdown in my output but I’ve got loads of half done tracks that need just a touch more work to get done. As always, they’re all over the place style-wise so I gotta set my mind to finishing them soon.
.
I consider you an accomplished DJ who knows exactly how to warm-up for a headliner, or headline a gig yourself. What advice can you give to people who are just getting into DJing?
.
The best thing about the digital age is that it has freed DJs from the financial limitations that buying records used to hold us to. When buying vinyl, I could never afford to buy all the tracks I wanted to play, so you end up buying records that all fit into one genre. But now you can buy MP3s from 5 different styles and figure out how to make it work, and thereby making your own sound. This is I think how I best like to construct my sets. By buying and playing music that is all over the place but making it work, you get the feel of how to work with the crowd and take a set in many different places – a very useful tool for the opening slots. And by digging through tons of music every week, you find all these peaktime gems at the same time that are not played out but can really rock a crowd and those get saved for the headlining slots.
.
So the key is really to just buy what you love and never play a track that you dont love. If you love every track you play, people can read into that and get into it that much more. A diverse music collection is never a bad thing, because you never know what you’re getting yourself into with some of these gigs, no matter what the promoter tells you.
.
What are your top 3 labels right now, and who are your top 3 producers right now?
.
Producers: Hugo, Nikitin and Semikashev, Dmitri Andreas
Labels: Discoteca, Alchemy, Systematic
.
What’s the best party you’ve been to this year, and why?
.
Joris Voorn at Cielo, July 3rd. The man can translate the technical genius of his carefully edited Balance CD straight into a rocking set of all things house and techno that had both the music heads and the uninitiated random clubgoers going absolutely nuts. Everyone was with him on every track he dropped, from the classic chicago house to the heady minimal grooves. One of my top nights ever at that club and easily one of the best sets I’ve ever heard from start to finish.
.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and why?
.
The Twilight on the Tikki this past March at WMC. Being able to open for SOS allows you to really play a wide, diverse range of tunes since they bring that to their live shows and their mixes—like on their Balance compilation—so it was heaven to have a clued in crowd as a captive audience on the floating beach that is the Tikki Boat. I was able to start with some cosmic disco, and play through some deep house into some minimal and tech house and just really stretch those legs as a DJ. Its very rare that you get to really build a set like that purely from scratch and it went down perfectly. Sometime opening does beat headlining and that was one of those sets.
.
Thanks Naveen!

RV Improvements as of 06-16-09

Greetings friends, readers and shoppers. We have made a few tweaks to the site, some of which will make some of you happy – none of which (hopefully) will send any of you into the waiting, open arms of Beatport. :) If this turns out to be the case, please let us know. We’ve been looking for an excuse to shuffle upper management….
.
John and Craig have been hard at work taking user feedback and molding the new RV 2.0 into a site on which, we hope, you will enjoy spending your ever-diminishing supply of free time. The first change comes from suggestions voiced by many, most notably from Podrunner head honcho and friend of RV, DJ Steve Boyett. Early in the development of the new site, we thought browsing would be best accomplished on a release by release basis. Our thinking was that users would want to be able to browse in a way that offered maximum content in the least amount of time. In a conversation with Eddie B regarding navigation of the site, Steve pointed out (and I’m paraphrasing here) “I just want a big list of tracks I can go through one by one”. Well Steve, say no more. On the left side of store landing page now resides a browse section, under which are buttons for tracks and samples. Browse away.
.
Speaking of samples, large strides have been made to make sample packs more accessible. Users can search and browse for them by title or genre. On a related note, I have been in touch with several new sample providers and will soon be adding to the already stellar Resonant Vibes sample stable. Check back for more details.
.
A last bit of news regarding the RV Network. For those of you who encountered problems uploading material to the Network the past few days, the issue has been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience, and would love it if you would upload any mixes and tracks that didn’t make it the first time. Shoot me an email at seth@resonantvibes.com if you do so I can give them a listen.
.
Until next time…

Introduction and (more importantly) RV Improvements

Hello All,
.
I suppose a brief introduction is in order. After all, everything you read on the internet is gospel, so you should have some idea from whom this information is coming, right? We wouldn’t want this to be a completely blind following ☺
.
Name, rank, and press affiliation: Seth A. Everhart, RV Content Manager at your service. Compared to my esteemed colleagues, I am a relative newcomer to the world of electronic music. I started working with Eddie, Sam and Craig roughly 2 years ago.  As a musician and recording engineer, I was of the opinion that “Drum Machines Have No Soul”, and that was all I needed to know about electronic music. Needless to say, they have opened my eyes and ears to a world of music I probably would not have otherwise found.
.
I haven’t fully pinned down the scope of topics about which I’ll be writing. My first topic, RV Improvements, will eventually be handed over to John, our Lead Developer. As John is in the trenches fighting the good fight, we decided to let him keep rolling and that I should handle this first post. I can say that interviews will constitute a good portion of my blogging. We have a few great subjects lined up, so keep an eye out.
.
Down to brass tacks…
.
A number of improvements have been made to the homepage. The first incarnation of the homepage provided a number of different avenues to explore, but some users felt that the occasional road sign would be useful. We moved some things around and dedicated some space to a few straightforward navigation buttons. Speaking of navigation, we also made it a priority to feature easy to find links to the social dwellings of RV around the web such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and the like. Also added were a few of the most recent blog posts and a featured release section for all the old school record shoppers who like to check out “Staff Picks”.
.
We’re quite proud of the site’s search functionality, which was recently improved (though very little, there was room). Search results became more encompassing and are now returned in reverse chronological order. This seems like a common sense move, but proved to be more complicated to implement than anticipated.
.
On the shop front, we’ve added the ability to view content by label. Again, seems straightforward, but you know what they say about Rome and building endeavors.
.
In the network, users are now able to edit the information for their original tracks and mixes, upload cover art, and have more control over the downloading and streaming of their content.
.
As an added bonus for those of you who happen to read the blog and buy tracks and sample packs, we’ve implemented browsing functionality that will add a new dimension to the shopping experience. Though the functionality is there, the links are not ☺ So, there’s no reason you would have found these from the home page, but you can be the first to enjoy them:
.
http://resonantvibes.com/shop/browse/samples
.
http://resonantvibes.com/shop/browse/tracks
.
That wraps up my first blog post. I look forward to getting to know you, so feel free to comment and/or email me at seth@resonantvibes.com, and watch for upcoming RV events. We’ll have some libations, conversations, and soak up some tunes.
.
Have a great weekend!

The RV 2.0 Media Player Is Live!

RV Media Player

Last week, I wrote a blog post about RV’s new agile approach to web development, and I explained that our philosophy will be to "deploy new technologies early and iterate often." Well, we’ve deployed another new technology now – namely our media player - and I wanted to discuss it since it’s such a central feature of our website.

Beta Caveat

Before I give a brief explanation of the features and thinking behind our new media player, I want to state the caveat that the player, like the rest of our site, is in beta mode. It’s functional, but it will become more polished in the weeks ahead.

Pop-up vs. On-Page Dilemma

If you’ve been shopping on electronic music download stores for a while, you probably know there are two basic types of media players: those that work in a pop-up window and those that work on-page. The pop-up approach allows you to enjoy uninterrupted playback while browsing through different pages of a site, but it has the downside of requiring you to toggle between two windows. On the other hand, the on-page media player approach prevents the window toggling issue, but it requires the use of frames or extensive Flash to give you uninterrupted playback. These frame and Flash solutions can have serious downsides in terms of crippling a site’s ability to change in response to your needs.

All of these considerations basically create (what Eddie B calls) the "pop-up vs. on-page dilemma."

Our Solution to the Dilemma

Our solution to the pop-up vs. on-page dilemma was to give you a media player with the positive elements of both approaches! How? …by combining a pop-up media player with an on-page playlist manager. Each item in our shop or network has a clickable "add to playlist" icon that allows you to add that item to your playlist manager. Then, when you’re ready, you can click the "play all" button to have your playlist play in our media player.

RV’s New Agile Approach to Web Development

Web Development

I’ve been corresponding with a number of RV supporters since the launch of the RV 2.0 site on March 24th, and they’ve given me feedback that led me to write this post. What I want to briefly explain here is the new approach that our company has decided to take toward web development.

First, let me state the obvious; RV 2.0 is a beta website. As such, there are a number of imperfections that are keeping Craig and John (our tech guys) super busy. You might ask the question, "Why would RV launch their new site without having everything perfectly in order". This is a good question, and it raises the issue of our company’s philosophy about web development.

After much consideration, we decided to take a more "agile" approach to development. This means we’re going to deploy new technologies early and iterate often. Our aim is to satisfy your needs and desires as much as possible, and we think this approach is the best way to do that. Why? …because it ultimately means we’re more focused on your feedback. For example, we could’ve obssessed over perfections and our own ideas for another three months before deploying RV 2.0…but then we would have missed three months where we could’ve been getting your feedback and incorporating it into our site. Instead, our plan was to launch the site early, with a solid infrstructure in place, and then to constantly improve it.

As I write this blog post, I’m watching Craig and John work away to make our site better ;) We’ve got loads of improvements in the pipeline – like a great new media player, WAV files, and tons of new labels ;)

At the risk of sounding overly philosophical, I’d say RV is like any organism or thoughtful person going through life…we’re evolving, one mutation/iteration at a time, in a positive direction ;)

I want you to know that our team greatly appreciates your patience, feedback, and support as we continue to make our way through this beta phase. We’re super excited about what we have in store for you in the very near future ;)

The RV Leeeeky Tikki Gallery!

So, finally I’ve overcome my battle with Photoshop, Picasa and people giving me a hard-time for taking so long to post these pics! Other galleries are coming soon. Let us know who you are if you’re in a picture!

Day one of RV 2.0

It’s almost time for me to go to bed, but I thought I should write a quick post talking about the launch of the new site.

Firstly, I want to say thanks to all our developers, designers, and people behind the scenes have done a great job getting the site live in time for todays launch!

They spent all night in the office migrating the site from our test server onto our main resonantvibes.com domain, and it wasn’t without some major problems.

As a result of the hiccups, I want to remind the people using the site that this is a real public beta, and we’re a work in progress. We’ll be updating the site regularly, so what you see today isn’t the final thing. We’ll be adding more features and fixing bugs like crazy over the coming weeks so stick with us, and check back often as frequent improvements will be posted.

We hope you like the new direction we’re taking the site, and we need you to be a part of it. So don’t be shy, login or register and upload your mixes and tracks to the network today!

Overview of RV 2.0

A couple days ago, I wrote a post to let everybody know that RV 1.0 was going bye-bye. I’m following up with this post because RV 2.0 is almost here!

Our new site will launch next Tuesday, March 24th. Until now, we’ve been somewhat cryptic when talking about it. We haven’t gone into much detail about the new features and sections, so I figured I’d take the time to do it here.

Let’s Start with the New Shop!

The first thing I should discuss is the new RV shop. Simply put, our new shop is going to blow our last shop away! For starters, we’re adding hundreds of new high-quality labels.

Our new shop will also have a radically improved search functionality. In RV 1.0, our search box only returned results that exactly matched your search term. The search feature on RV 2.0 is much smarter and faster!

In our new shop, we will also sell releases, in addition to individual tracks. You’ll finally be able to check out each EP that is on our site, and you’ll be able to browse through our full catalog more efficiently by browing through releases rather than just tracks.

We’re also going to offer WAV files in our new shop! Not all of the content will be available in WAV format from day one, but we will quickly reach a point where the vast majority of our new releases are available in WAV and MP3 format. Oh yeah, I should also mention that we’re going to be selling our WAV tracks for $1.50 each. Frankly, we don’t see any reason to charge more than that.

RV 2.0 will also allow you to save your billing information in a super secure place (with authorize.net). With RV 1.0, you had to enter your credit card information everytime you made a purchase; those days are over. By allowing you to save your billing information, we’re making things more convenient. We’re also protecting that information by not storing it on our server. We have good security checks in place, but they’re not as good as authorize.net’s. They have tremendous resources allocated to security, and they service some of the biggest companies online. Bottom line: you get convenience and security!

There are some other really cool features in our new shop, but they’re applicable to our whole new site, so I’ll discuss them below.

Now onto the New Network Section

So here’s where things start to get even more interesting…RV 2.0 will have an entirely new network section. In this section, DJs and producers will be able to upload their own mixes and tracks so that the entire Resonant Vibes community can download them for free! Why are we building this network? …because we think it’s a win-win situation. DJs and Producers win because they have a forum in which to promote their music; fans win because there’s a place for them to download quality music for free…and nobody has to worry about losing time with Megaupload, YouSendIt, or those other sorts of file sharing services. You’ll be able to upload and download your tunes in a clean, easy-to-use space.

To take things a step further, we’re going to reward the DJs and producers who are uploading quality content. If your track or mix gets the highest rating for a given period of time – more on ratings below – we’re going to show some recognition for your talent! We’ll sign your track to our own RV Digital Recordings label and put it in our store. Or, in the case of a mix, we’ll write a blog post about you as a DJ to let our whole community know who you are. Winning tracks and mixes will also earn you credits in our store.

I must say we’re super excited about this network. We know how many DJs and producers are out there with serious skills that are not getting the recognition they deserve, and it’s going to be really cool to help them get attention. On the flip side, we know how cool it will be to be able to download massive amounts of quality free electronic music. We’re fans too; we listen to electronic music all day everyday…hell, I’m going to be getting lots of new tunes off the network myself!

The "My RV" Section

RV 2.0 will have a section called "My RV." This is where you’ll be able to manage your uploads and the information in your public profile page. This is also where you will access your order history, billing information, etc. Eventually, we’ll use this section to learn all of your tastes and preferences so you won’t have to find the music you like; it will find you.

Our Blog and Featured DJs Section

Obviously, you already know about our blog if you’re reading this. You may have also noticed that’s it’s improving. We now have a search box for the blog that allows you to search quickly through all of the posts. I should mention that you can also expect the quality and quantity of our posts to increase. For the RV 2.0 website, we’ll be inviting new industry figures to write with us. We’ll also have access to interviews with top DJs and artists.

RV 2.0 is going to have a Featured DJs section that will work much like the Meet the DJs section in RV 1.0. Basically, we’ll be highlighting/featuring talented DJs from around the world. At some point, we’ll probably start featuring the DJs who have the highest rated mixes.

Other Exciting New Features

There are loads of other innovative, exciting features in RV 2.0 that I haven’t mentioned yet because they’re not specific to any particular section of the site.

The first sitewide feature that we’re excited about is ratings. That’s right, you’ll be able to give a thumbs up or thumbs down rating to any track, release, or sample pack in our shop. You’ll also be able to rate any track or mix in network. The idea is simple here. We think you’ll benefit greatly from knowing what material the RV community thinks is good or bad. This will help you make more informed purchase decisions, and it will make your searches for music in the network more efficient.

Another sitewide feature in RV 2.0 will be comments. You’ll be able to comment on all items in our store and network. The idea here is similar to the idea behind having ratings. We think the more information you have about a piece of music, the better off you’ll be.

I should also mention the intriguing feature of karma that RV 2.0 will have. Basically, there will be ways for you to increase your credibility in the RV community. While musical tastes are certainly subjective, we recognize that some people are more plugged into the scene than others. If you’re someone who’s been DJ-ing and producing on a professional level for years, we’re going to find that out, and your comments and ratings will carry more weight than a random person who stumbles upon our site.

Another feature that we’re seriously excited about is tagging! On so many occasions, we’ve gotten suggestions from people about providing a more nuanced genre classification scheme. Well, we’ve listened, and I think we’ve taken the feedback to heart. On the RV 2.0 site, all community members will be able to tag tracks, releases, and samples in the store, as well as tracks and mixes in the network. So if you think a track is "twisted progressive tech house," you’ll be able to tag it as such. This is one of the running themes for RV 2.0; we’re putting the power in the hands of our community. All together we know you’re smarter than us! …so we’re not going to tell you what music is good or tell you what genre it’s in, you’ll tell us.

The New Media Player

RV 2.0 is also going to have a new media player. We’ve tried to give you the best of all possible worlds…First off, you’ll be able to preview any item in the network or store right there on the page, without having to launch the new media player. This allows you to have quick and easy access to tracks if that’s what you want. On the other hand, you will also have the option of adding an item to a playlist. This will let you browse from one page to the next – without being stuck on a given page to check out a preview. Then, whenever you’r ready to listen to the previews in your playllist, you’ll be able to launch the new media player, and they’ll load up. You will also have the option of playing those previews in a different media player (e.g. iTunes, Windows Media Player, or whatever) if that’s your preference. Once you’ve loaded a playlist in our new player, you’ll be able to buy the items (if they’re from the store) in one fell swoop. I should also mention that the media player will work for items in the network.

Concluding Thoughts about RV 2.0

Well, there you have it. I’ve touched on some of the RV 2.0 features that have us really excited. The one thing I should also mention – and this may be the most important point in this post – is that RV 2.0 will be a constantly evolving entity! We know it’s not going to be perfect on day one; in fact, we expect it to have a number of bugs and quirks for us to work out. However, we’ve built RV 2.0 on a rock solid infrastructure and foundation that will allow us to constantly adapt and improve it. Moreover, we have an exceptional tech team that will be working around the 24-7 to improve the site and to incorporate your feedback when you share it with us.

We hope you’re as excited about what’s coming as we are!

Eddie B

RV 1.0 Is Going Bye-Bye

It’s with strongly mixed emotions that I write this blog post.

On July 5, 2005, we launched the beta version of the Resonant Vibes 1.0 website. We didn’t have a big web development budget; we were just a few resourceful with a drive to share the electronic music experience with the world. Over time, our version 1.0 website changed in certain ways, but pretty much stayed the same under the hood. Well, all that’s about to change tomorrow!

Tomorrow, around 5:00pm or so (Eastern Time), we’re going to take the RV version 1.0 website down to make way for the new, drastically improved RV 2.0. We’ll be offline for a couple days – though we’ll keep our blog live to stay in touch. After that, we’ll resurface with a completely new look and with cool features that nobody else is providing for the electronic music community.

So, while I’ll always have a tender spot for our first site, I must say that I’m really excited about where we’re heading!

I’ll be writing more posts throughout the week to keep you up to speed on things.

Eddie B
