Movement 2010 Line-Up Announced

Movement 2010 | Resonant Vibes Electronic Music Blog
Since 2000 electronic music fans from across the globe have made the pilgrimage every May to Detroit, the city where Techno music was born. 2010 marks the 10th anniversary of the Movement Festival (formerly DEMF) in Detroit.

In 2009 the Movement Electronic Music Festival recorded its best attendance figures to date since becoming a ticketed event in 2005.  Some 83,322 people filled the outdoor venue last year.  An international partnership was also forged with promoters from Torino Italy to create Movement Torino.

The rumors continue to be confirmed that the bearded techno-über guru Hawtin will be hot on the festival circuit this year, headlining live as Plastikman. Other headliners included  Model 500 and Inner City with a total of 70 acts announced today covering a spectrum of sounds from techno through to livetronica. My line-up highlights are: Agoria, Cassy, Chris Liebling, Derrick Carter, DJ Godfather, DJ Sneak, Ida Engberg, Italoboyz, Jamie Jones, Joel mull, John Acquaviva, Josh Wink, Luke Hess, Martin Buttrich, Martyn, Michael Meyer, Mt Scruff, Oner Ozer, Redio Slave, Robert Hood, Ryan Crosson, Simian Mobile Disco and Theo Parish. You can check the full list in the graphic below, as I couldn’t find a decent HTML list to copy and paste.

Ford are the presenting sponsor this year which adds testimony to how much the commercial reach of the festival has grown. The result might be a line-up that seems too mainstream for some of the techno puritans—who’s heads will be rammed in a sub in Made in Detroit area anyway—but one that should keep the rest of us revelers happy.

$40 early bird tickets are now on sale and all the details are to be found at  http://www.paxahau.com/movement/

Roman Azzaro – Get the Curse 085

Roman Azzaro Get the Curse

While there are many sources for getting dance music online, I only turn to a few on a regular basis. The Get the Curse podcast is certainly one of my regular, trusted sources. These guys just keep serving up the goods!

I wanted to write this blog post to give props the Get the Curse crew, and I figured I should also pick out a good mix to give you a sample of what they’re up to. There are so many quality mixes in the Get the Curse archives, I had some trouble handpicking one…but I eventually decided to highlight episode 085, from Roman Azzaro.

I poked around online, and it was difficult to find a lot of information about Roman. From what I gathered, he’s based in Paris, and he’s firmly rooted in the Parisian underground scene…the sort of DJ in town that those in the know know about. He is part of the crew running the upstart label, Coton Tige, which has (more…)

Sam’s Picks # 01 – January 29, 2010

SG_picksThe regular readers of our blog will know that Seth, our content manager, does a sterling job of publishing a weekly top picks. His posts always get a lot of reads (and listens) as he includes a mini-mix of his picks with the post.
.
As of late I know it’s been hard for him to continue the tradition of weekly posts as his other work load has increased. His posts are always well considered, (in fact almost obsessed on), and he always showcases top notch tunes from the shop. I know that it takes him a good deal of time to put together the mix in addition to writing his post, coming up with a nice array of covers, and meticulously linking to each artist, label and track he features. As you can imagine it’s a lot of work and takes a long time.
.
You might be asking what’s my point? Well, this is the first in a new series of my picks from the site. I’m equally as busy as Seth, but I probably have a slight edge on him when it comes to putting together a mix… as I only need to find the time to go hunting for tunes and then hit record as I give them a spin.
. All of the tunes are fresh and I enjoyed downloading them and then playing them straight away, recording the set as I went along. As most DJs will tell you there's something a bit special about playing new tunes... I think that's the addiction getting it's fix right there!
.
Conversely, it can throw you a curve ball as you don’t actually know the tunes inside out. Occasionally the 2-minute preview isn’t enough to expose a dodgy vocal drop, or the track that decides to switch to an off-beat in the mix out section. Anyway, I was sipping on a little Old Forester and enjoying my newly revised home studio so times were good. Here’s the track list:
.
1. Diego Celi - Choronzon (Original Mix) [Mindsounds]
2. Andri – Spacers Case (Digital Exclusive) [Cityfox]
3. Haze – Oh My Dog (Original Mix) [Dialtone Records]
4. Andri – Tschege (Original Mix) [Cityfox]
5. Simon Garcia – Raw War (Original Mix) [Dieb Audio]
6. Haze – Politiks (Original Mix) [Dialtone Records]
7. Helge Kuhl – About Guitars and Heroes (Original Mix) [Paintwork]
8. Bukaddor & Fishbeck – Rolling Stoned (Original Mix) [My Best Friend / MBF]
8. Hector Couto – Friction (Original Mix) [Definition Records]
10.Pirahnahead – Self Conscience (Original Mix) [Third Ear Recordings]
11. Arnaud Le Texier – You Know (You know Emmanuel Ternois WTF remix (digital only)) [Safari Electronique]
12. Steve Parker – Mexilhao remix by Handycraft (Original Mix) [Weave Music]
13. Paul Kalkbrenner – Torted (Original Mix) [BPitch Control]
14. Paul Kalkbrenner – Bengang (Original Mix) [BPitch Control]
.
Unfortunately, what you won’t get for this series picks—which you get from Seth—is the nice commentary, the 30 deep links into the site, or even a weekly episode. I’m going to do them as often as I can, which might be once a week or once a month. I don’t know as it really depends how busy I am.
.
Click this link to visit my network profile page where you should be able to launch the tracks on the mix straight into the media player. Not the same as deep linking, but easy enough!
.
The Resonant Vibes Podcast will also continue so this series is in addition to the rv_cast. The next episode has been turned and will be podcast soon. I hope you enjoy the mix.

Adam Beyer – Slices Documentary

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, then you probably know I like Adam Beyer’s sound and style of music. Some time ago, I came across a short, interesting documentary about him; it was released by Slices – The Electronic Music Magazine. I’ve embedded the documentary in this post so you can check it out. Enjoy!

Paco Osuna’s Extended Halloween Set at Love (NYC)

Paco Osuna Halloween

I spent this Halloween in New York City, which put me in the position of having to make some difficult decisions…like where to go out! There were so many great events going down in the city, I felt like a kid in a candy store…in just one night, there were performances by Danny T, Above and Beyond, Craig Richards, Mr. C, and countless other tight DJs.

After carefully weighing my options, I decided to spend Halloween night checking out Paco Osuna’s Extended Halloween Set at Love. I must admit I was thoroughly pleased with this event!

While I was tempted to catch some of the other DJs playing last night, I remembered seeing Paco play at the Save the Cannibals party a few months ago. My recollection of that event made me eager to catch him again.

When I got to Love, Paco hadn’t started playing, and there were very few people on the dance floor. The tunes were good, but the energy was flat. I found myself thinking, “wait a minute…it’s Halloween night in NYC and Paco Osuna is playing; where is everybody.” However, I knew it was going to pick up.

As the night progressed, things did start to pick up. People started coalescing on the dance floor – most were dressed in great costumes. Among other things, I saw a big guy dressed in a tooth ferry outfit (hilarious!) and a smoking hot girl wearing a dominatrix costume; it was all picturesque. Then, around 12:30 or so, Paco finally got on the decks and cranked the volume up to a much higher level. I should mention that the Love sound system was exceptionally clear and ear-pleasing.

As Paco started playing, our party energy started to swell. He was playing his own ilk of techno. It was rich and melodic, also chunky and warm, almost having the feel of prog. By the time he was two or three tracks into his set, everybody in the room was absolutely getting down!

All in, it was a great clubbing experience. I have to give serious props to Made Event for putting together yet another great party and to Love for providing a nice venue and (of course) to Paco for providing some seriously dope, underground tunes!

Five Questions with AMBIVALENT (Minus/Detroit, USA)

Many people recognize Ambivalent (aka Kevin McHugh) as the upcoming artist featured on Richie Hawtin’s Minus imprint, and while that is true, there is the side I also remember from his days in New York when he hosted his “Micromini” nights at Filter 14, and was co-host with Camea on The Nerd Tank radio show on East Village Radio.  I know Kevin as a genuine purveyor and lover of techno, and before the craze of minimal, he was there from the early days.

I had a chance to speak with Kevin as he prepares to play in NY and LA Halloween weekend.  Now a Berlin transplant and in-demand artist globally, he still finds time to engage in a small chat.

Here are five questions I asked him. Enjoy.

Ambivalent

Deepak: It seems like you have been working with Richie for a long time.  when, where and how did you relationship develop and how has your relationship evolved now that your a Minus artist?
Ambivalent: I met Rich when I was doing a music festival for an arts organization called Creative Time. We did electronic music and art events under the Brooklyn Bridge. I kept asking Rich to do a show with us, and it never worked out. But we ended up talking about common interests and hung out whenever he was in NY. Eventually we started doing projects together. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that he asked me to join the label as an artist. That was the beginning of a different phase of my life, but our friendship definitely influenced me tremendously.

Deepak: How has the move to berlin pushed your career along?  did you think twice about it, or was it an easy decision?   why do so many artists flock to Berlin?
Ambivalent: It definitely wasn’t an easy decision. I moved to NY in 1996, so it feels like home. I loved my life there, and would have loved to stay. But ultimately there was no way to make a living on my music and still pay a New York rent. Being in Berlin has made it possible to focus on my music rather than a day job. I also love European audiences and their dedication to this music culture. People recognize your work more clearly and appreciate it differently. There are great audiences in North America, also, but it seems that things take hold more slowly in the US.

Deepak: Do you have a favorite gig from this year you can tell us about?
Ambivalent: There are a few that stand out. I just played with a bunch of other Minus artists in a Contakt show at Brixton Academy in London. Piknik Electronik in Montreal was awesome. A great show at Cocoon club in Frankfurt and also the Monsters of House festival in Munich.
One of my favorite gigs was on a Sunday afternoon in an abandoned warehouse in Hamburg. The guys who do this party are so cool. They made this massive space feel so intimate just by propping these shipping containers around the space, and then they had people in furry animal costumes running around…it just felt like the kind of thing where there’s so much love put into a really underground event. That’s the stuff I keep hoping to see more of…

Deepak: Do you miss NY, and anything in particular about the city?
Ambivalent: My girlfriend still lives in Brooklyn, so I go back pretty often to see her and she comes to Europe pretty often as well. That tends to keep me from getting homesick. Of course there are friends who I miss, and certain things that I rush to when I get back. Namely good mexican food. One thing that you don’t get so often in other cities is the busy streetlife and people watching. I was in Paris this summer and a bus blew smog in my face, and it actually made me miss New York. That sounds so twisted, doesn’t it?

Deepak: What are a few differences and similarities of the scene in Berlin and NY?
Ambivalent: Well, the music scene in Berlin is different than it was a few years ago. I think it’s changed because so many people have heard the legends about certain clubs, etc. So now there seems to be a pressure for things to live up to. There are definitely nice things about being in a city with so many clubs and DJs that you can go out any night of the week and hear someone really good. The flip-side is that you don’t have the same excitement as you’d have in a so-called “smaller” scene. The NY parties I’ve been to since I left have really impressed me with their energy. I think it’s getting better all the time.

Join me in welcoming Ambivalent back to NY as he DJs our final Hidden Recordings Residency Night of 2009 and Halloween Eve Special on Friday October 30th!

re:produce 005: AOE – Out Now, Exclusively on RV!

Techno and tech house samples from Absence of EssenceWe just released another killer sample pack, re:produce 005: AOE. This one is available exclusively on RV, and it offers 103 MB of infectious, delightfully warped techno and tech house sounds for just $10!

Absence of Essence (AOE) is the Atlanta-based production trio consisting of Darius Kohanim, Knix, and Dee Washington. These artists are collectively responsible for releases on labels like Lobotomy Records, Audio Therapy, Proton Music, AlterImage Recordings, Influx Audio, Hunya Munya, and Emote Music. AOE has worked alongside, and seen their tracks remixed by, the likes of Pig & Dan, Habersham, and a host of other top-tier producers.

The AOE members share a passion for the technical aspects of their craft and for the creation of forward-thinking electronic music. Their re:produce 005 sample pack is the cutting-edge product of three creatively warped minds. This collection is filled with intense, twisted sound effects, rhythmical noise and synth loops, mangled vox effects, and wicked drum patterns with dirty techno undertones. Most of the samples were recorded at 126 bpm, and they are all ready for use in Ableton Live. AOE designed these unique signature sounds using Logic, Cubase, Native Instruments, and several other audio production tools.

To get a taste for the innovative, mind-bending sounds in AOE’s re:produce 005 pack, just check out the preview by clicking the play button below ;)

Enjoy!

re:produce 004: Kazell – Out Now, Exclusively on RV!

Techno and house samples from KazellWe just released a stellar new sample pack, re:produce 004: Kazell. This one is available exclusively on RV, and it offers 125 MB of uberlicious, inspiring sounds for just $10!

You probably already know that Kazell is an exceptional DJ, but I’m still going to say a bit about him before describing his re:produce pack

Kazell is a UK native and Los Angeles transplant. When he first got to the States in 1991, he started building an impeccable reputation in Atlanta (his home base) and all along the East Coast. If you’ve heard his music, then you know he plays a mind-stimulating breed of tunes – a fusion of dub, tribal, and breaks, layered on top of a tech house base. More recently, Kazell has broken into the upper echelons of the dance music industry, going from “one of the hottest DJs in warmup” (according to the L.A. Times) to a label owner and peak hour headliner in demand worldwide. In making his ascent in the industry, Kazell has played gigs with the biggest DJs in the world like Sander Kleinenberg, Deep Dish, Sasha, and Digweed (at their request).

In addition to his success as a DJ, Kazell has amassed a solid body of work in the studio. His critically acclaimed 2003 debut release Driven was voted “best compilation of the year” by Jive Magazine. His tracks have also appeared on top labels like Global Underground and Lost Language, and they’ve been featured on compilations by DJs like Sander Kleinenberg and Nick Warren.

On a more personal note, I must say that I’ve been an ardent fan of Kazell since I first heard his Kiss 100 guest mix back in 2006 – amazing, vintage prog ;)

Obviously, we were pleased to have Kazell do the honors for creating re:produce 004, and he absolutely delivered the goods! His aim in creating this pack was to offer you a view directly into his world of production. This top-shelf sample collection includes:

          9 Arp Sequences
          7 Bassline Sequences
24 Drum and Percussion Hits (with a flexible NI Battery Kit)
          24 Grooves
          2 Synth Risers
          4 Synth Chords/Pads

As an added bonus, Kazell threw in five Native Instruments “Massive” patches, which are crafted to allow for superb flexibility and control. He recorded all of his re:produce sounds using Logic, deriving sounds from analogue and digital sources.

When asked for feedback about the re:produce 004 pack, Kazell said:

It’s great to build a track from the ground up, synthesizing every element, but for most of us that’s just not realistic. With this pack, I wanted to share some of the custom building blocks I reach for when starting a new track. I tend to write these types of parts when I’m in between projects and keep them as flexible and open ended as possible. I hope you enjoy this sample pack.

To check out a preview of the re:produce 004: Kazell pack, just click the play icon below. We think you’ll like what you hear ;)

rv_cast 009 Mixed by Alland Byallo

Alland Byallo | Resonant VibesThe Resonant Vibes podcast episode 009 has been mixed Alland Byallo, a San Francisco based techno DJ and producer. He’s a resident at [KONTROL] which is one of the longest running and best regarded techno nights in the Bay Area—possibly even in the country—and has played gigs alongside some of the biggest names in the business.
.
His recent full-length album “Brick by Brick” was recently released to a slew of positive reviews and gained support from a good number of heavy-hitters in the industry. The album is a collection of 10 tightly produced tracks that sit somewhere between techno and tech house, and features sophisticated drum sequencing alongside what I’d describe as slightly unconventional use of pads for this style of techno.
.
With a string of new releases in the pipeline on labels like Auralism, Hallucination Ltd., Vellum Recordings and his own Nightlight Music, it’s clear that Alland is playing an important role in helping to shape the future sound of techno emanating from the United States’ West Coast.
.
I’ve listened to Alland’s podcast a few times and it strikes me as the right way to approach doing a DJ mix; it starts off deep and a little techy before easing into the groove and stepping things up. Towards the end he slowly takes the vibe as it moves into it’s natural conclusion.
.
Can you tell me what you’re currently working on?
.
My new release on my own label, Nightlight Music, just came out this week. Right now I’m somewhere between graphic design mode and remix mode. The remixes are stacking up, as I’m in between studios. So everything is started, but far from finished. On deck are remixes for Subsensory, Noice!, Vizual—Josh Iz’s new label—a deep house remix for Jay Tripwire, and two versions of a sweet little remix for Adjunct Audio. I’m also slowly working on some originals for a Liebe*Detail digital release, as well as something for Hallucination Ltd. Also my EP for Missive is out soon! Smokin’ remix by Alexkid. As far as design work goes, I’m making lots of flyers for a few steady clients and working on a Microsoft Zune project as a subcontractor for a friend. Lots to do! (more…)
