Miami WMC parties are plentiful, as you no doubt know. I want to continue highlighting the parties that I think will offer a special experience for you. Specifically, in this post, I want to fill you in on the WMC events being presented by listed Productions.

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, then you probably know we’ve worked with listed on some previous epic events. Each year, listed ups the ante by delivering bigger and better Miami WMC parties. This year promises not to be an exception!

In order of occurrence, here are listed’s WMC parties…

TWILIGHT ON THE TIKKI

On Thursday afternoon, March 25th, listed is kicking off their WMC festivities with the Twilight on the Tikki party. The headlining talent for this event is SOS (i.e. Omid 16B, Demi, and Desyn Masiello). Naveen G will also be gracing the decks. As with all of their Tikki parties, listed is offering an OPEN BAR for this one! If you’ve never been on one of the listed Tikki parties, I can say firsthand that they’re amazing. (For more details on Twilight on the Tikki, go here.)

MOONLIGHT ON THE TIKKI

When the night falls, the Tikki boat will head back out again. For this soiree, the tunes will be delivered in the form of a M_nus showcase! Troy Pierce, Marc Houle, and Barem will assume headlining honors after listed resident Nikita warms things up. Again, there will be an OPEN BAR, so things are bound to get interesting. Tickets for Moonlight on the Tikki are selling for $150, but listed is offering a
SPECIAL $50 DISCOUNT for RV supporters! To received this discount, just contact us at support@resonantvibes.com.

FREAKY TIKKI

The third time is the charm, and this may well be the case for the Freaky Tikki party. This event will feature Cassy and Sebo K, who are guaranteed to provide a sublime soundscape to start your day. The boat will leave at 5:30am, with Hoj playing a warm-up set. I can only imagine that this will be an extraordinary crowd, composed of only the fittest party people who have survived the previous day and night! (For more information about the Freaky Tikki party, go here.)

BALANCE 016 RELEASE PARTY

After three incredible trips on the Tikki boat, the listed crew (assuming they’re still alive) will be hosting an event that promises to be one of the best of this year’s WMC – the Balance 016 Release Party! The talent for this event is obscene! …Agoria, Will Saul, Luke Fair, Joris Voorn, Desyn Masiello, Chris Fortier, Emerson Todd, Phil K, Dory, Hac Le, and Tom Pandzic. This party will take place at the Victor Hotel, a superb, upscale venue. Simply put, you don’t want to miss this one. (For tickets, go here.)

VARSITY ALL STARS

On Saturday, listed is going to close out their WMC festivities with another Varsity All Stars party at the Victor Hotel. Talent for the event will include Anja Schneider, Pan-Pot, Nick Curly, Touane (live), Sety, Dan Ghenacia, Vincenzo, Mikael Stavostrand (live), Mike Khoury, Mike Hiratzka, Giorgio Roma and Alex Dolby, Michelangelo, Julio, and a special guest! This will be a marathon of fun, for those who can keep up! (For tickets, go here.)

If you’ve checked out our network over the past couple days, you probably noticed that we did away with thumbs down voting. This is a fairly significant change, so I figured I’d write a quick blog post to explain the reason for it.
.
For starters, let’s look at the philosophical raison d’etre for the RV network. The aim of our network is to serve as a resource where DJs and producers can gain visibility and where fans can access a wealth of quality free music. Basically, we know there are tons of talented DJs and producers out there who deserve recognition for their skills, and we want to help them get it. With this in mind, we don’t think we’re helping any artists by allowing their mixes to be voted down. The world is full of critics and naysayers. We want the RV network to be a place where artists get support, not discouragement.
.
Don’t get me wrong; honest feedback can certainly be helpful for up-and-coming artists. For this reason, we’ve left in place the comment feature so that the RV community (you) can still share your candid thoughts about any track or mix on our site.
.
Another more practical reason for our removal of thumbs down voting is that some people were voting disingenuously during our contests cycles. For example, we’d be running a contest cycle, and people would start voting some of the top-rated mixes down so that their favorite mixes would stand a better chance of winning.
.
This actually bothered me quite a bit in a few cases. On multiple occasions, I watched as solid mixes were voted down by people who wanted to game the system. Two examples of this that immediately come to mind are the mixes submitted by Ingo Vogelmann (for mix cycle 004) and Naveen G (for mix cycle 005). Ingo’s “Welcome 2K10” mix was a fine progressive mix, and Naveen’s “Sub Zero to Plain Zero” mix was rock solid. Both of these mixes started receiving thumbs up votes and a string of favorable comments, then people seemed to start trying to keep them from winning. There were other victims of this sort of behavior, so we’ve taken action to prevent this from happening in the future.
.
So that’s pretty much it in a nutshell. Going forward, people will win contests by receiving thumbs up votes, not by virtue of other music being voted down.
.
Speaking of contests…I should tell you to be on the lookout for new ones to start soon. We’re cooking up some more cool prizes with MixMeister, so stay tuned!
.

I’ve been meaning to write a post for some time now to make the bold, unbiased claim that I think RV has one of the best dance music podcasts available today! Seriously, I don’t know if you’ve been tuning in, but the rv_cast has featured some killer episodes…all underground and all fresh.

I felt the need to write this post because I want to help get the word out. The rv_cast is not as visible as some of the other dance music podcasts, but I think we’re gradually appearing on more people’s radars. Sam has been the brains and muscle behind the podcast, arranging for guest mixes and contributing a mix or two of his own. He’s seen to it that we stay true to the music, offering an original, intelligent series of mixes for folks who appreciate the real stuff.

I’d prefer that you not take my word for it on this one. I encourage you to check out a few rv_cast episodes. For example, check out rv_cast 013, mixed by Estroe. I’ve listened to this one countless times, and it just keeps getting better. Estroe laid down a sophisticated set of tracks and blended them together perfectly.

Another rv_cast episode that’s really worth checking out is the one from Jason Patrick. This guy has skillz. I gained real respect for Jason after hearing him play live at the Varsity All Stars 2009 party (headlined by Anja Schneider). His rv_cast mix is a finely crafted work with a perfect flow – a true specimen of aural artistry.

I’ll briefly discuss one more rv_cast episode here…the one from Alland Byallo. I think this episode was a sort of breakout mix for us, and it will certainly rewire your brain if you listen to it intently. Alland’s mix is one of those that you can have fun studying and analyzing…really focusing on the transitions. It’s intelligent, crisp, and clean. Great stuff!

There hasn’t been a bad rv_cast episode yet. I would write about all of the episodes here, but I don’t want to overwhelm you with recommendations. I do, however, have to give a few other honorable mentions here…you should definitely check out the episodes by Sam (of course!), Savas Pascalidis, Angel Alanis, and Naveen G. They’re all hot to death!

Enjoy these existing rv_cast episode, and keep an eye out for new ones coming soon!

It starts off housey and groovy before getting deep and techy. Then it goes into a bit of techno before wrapping up with some deeper stuff again. I really enjoyed mixing it as I was able to combine tunes that work really well in a club alongside some others that I might not get away with playing out. What’s more, it’s been a few weeks since my last mix for the podcast which means I had a great selection of new tunes to use.
.

I’m not even sure where to start in describing the LovEvolution 2009 festival that took place in San Francisco over the weekend. If I had to sum up my thoughts, I would say it was “Simply Amazing”!

The experience of being at this event was so rich that I’m not going to try to condense it into one post; I’m going to share it in two recaps. (Of course, I should also mention that we’ve got exclusive LovEvolution video and photos coming soon to our blog!)

Sam and I got to San Francisco on Friday evening, just in time to grab dinner and head over to the listed Presents Tyrant party (featuring Lee Burridge and Craig Richards). This was a great way to start the weekend. The tunes were killer, and the crowd’s energy was super positive! (We’ll have a photo gallery from this event for you in the next day or so.)

After wrapping up a fairly late night at the Tyrant party, Sam and I headed back to the hotel for what seemed more like a nap than a real night’s sleep. Before I knew it, my alarm was going off, and we were hustling to get downtown to check in for the LovEvolution parade. As we made our way downtown, we started seeing other partygoers. The weather was shaping up nicely, and you could sense that something big was about to happen.

We got our media credentials and then headed to the listed float. More and more people kept showing up to the area where the floats were parked, and you could feel this strong sense of anticipation and excitement: we were all ready to get on the floats and get the party going!

Eventually, we all got on our respective floats, and the parade got started. As the listed float began its procession, we were being blessed with a barrage of pounding, underground beats being played by DJ Dory! (We’ve got video of this.) I can’t say enough good things about Dory’s DJ-ing; she’s controlled and technically sound, but also not afraid to get dirty!

As we made our way through the streets of San Francisco, I felt like I was in heaven. The sun was shining brightly…the air was the perfect temperature…and I was surrounded by high quality dance music and thousands of people who were lost with me in the tunes! It just doesn’t get much better than that!

As the listed float kept making its way through the streets, the crowd became thicker and thicker. The girls were hot, confidently showing off in their revealing party outfits, feeling emboldened by the music. Everywhere you turned, everybody was getting down! All races and ethnicities, all sexual orientations, all ages, both genders – just a massive crowd of people united by a shared love for quality dance music!

At some point in the procession, I looked over at the DJ booth and saw Dory handing the reins to none other than Naveen G! I knew we were in for a treat. Naveen stepped up in a major way, as he always does, delivering his own unique ilk of proggy, techy, dark, make-you-lose-your-mind kinda tunes! I remember a particular epic build up that Naveen worked into his set…when the beat dropped, I watched one guy surrender to it and start following our float, led uncontrollably by the speakers

As Naveen kept jamming out, we were getting nearer to our stopping point at the Civic Center. The crowd was getting even wilder; I saw people holding on to street posts and dancing, basically losing their minds as we rode past. At some point before we reached the Civic Center, I hopped off the float so I could mingle with the crowd, which (needless to say) made for a very interesting experience…

To Be Continued in Recap (Part 2)…

Eddie B

If you’ve been following RV for long enough, then you may recall that we actually attended the San Francisco LoveFest in 2006. Now, the organizers of the San Francisco Love Parade and San Francisco LoveFest have changed the name of the festival to LovEvolution. (The idea was to distinguish the event from another “Love Festival” event in Los Angeles.) In any case, it’s still the same great shindig, based on the incredibly positive energy and spirit of the original Love Parade in Berlin. Last year, 100,000 people showed up to enjoy the irresistible beats that were oozing out of the floats as they paraded through the streets of downtown San Francisco.

So what are we going to be doing at the festival? (…besides indulging our insatiable addictions to dance music!) Our game plan will be to get exclusive video, photos, and editorial content for our blog so that you can experience LovEvolution 2009 with us! We’re eager to capture the heart and soul of this event for the RV community.

In terms of our agenda – and this will come as no surprise – we plan to be hanging with our favorite underground party crew, listed Productions! As always, these guys have cooked up some super-exciting LovEvolution events. First off, on Friday, we’re going to be at listed’s party featuring Tyrant (Lee Burridge and Craig Richards)! This is Tyrant’s first appearance in America in 10 years, and my expectations for this are absurdly high! Next, on Saturday, we’re going to be hitching a ride on the “listed Gets Twisted” float. We’ll be riding through the streets of San Francisco listening to the tunes of Lee Burridge, Danny Howells, Craig Richards, Bill Patrick, Hac Le, Mike Khoury, Nikita, Dory, Hoj, and Naveen G. THAT’S GONNA BE BANANAS!

We’ll have coverage of everything for you.

Just stay tuned to the RV blog for more LovEvolution goodies and updates.

Eddie B

PS If you’re interested, we’ve added mixes to our network by nearly all of the DJs who are performing at LovEvolution, so you can download them for free!

It’s that time of year again. The long summer days are officially behind us, and as we make an almost ceremonial descent into the winter months there’s time for one last summer fling. What’s more it’s a free fling full of “Love” and it’s set in the heart of San Francisco. It’s a fling where music, sun, good people and good times can all get it on one last time.
.
That’s right, it’s time for San Francisco’s annual Love “Something” parade. This year it’s called “LovEvolution” and for more information on why it’s name keeps changing you can visit the organizers’ site HERE.
.
Regular readers of this blog will know that rv has a soft-spot for the fine people over at listed Productions. We’ve been involved in several of their past events and they put on ridiculously good parties while understanding what’s involved to make them a success. They know that it takes the right combination of world-class talent, mind-blowing sound systems and quirky themed productions to bring out the exhibitionist in us all. The result is an experience you’ll keep talking about. It’s even a little piece of history in the making if you’re lucky.
.
For this year’s LovEvolution weekend listed are setting the bar high with an insane schedule of 4 parties in 3 days. Each of their parties is unique and worthy of it’s own blog post, but I’ve condensed them all into one. I will say is that if you’re planing to be anywhere remotely close to the Bay Area over the LovEvolution weekend you OWE it to yourself to attend one of their parties. It’s that simple.
.
Friday: Tyrant featuring Lee Burridge and Craig Richards
The Scoop: Wow, what a way to start! This is the first time Lee and Craig have played together Stateside as Tyrant in almost 10 years. Tyrant built a reputation as the residents of London’s Fabric nightclub by providing the backbone to the clubs musical direction. Together they understand music in a way that’s truly mind-expanding and they have a constant focus on keeping the vibe going. Combine that with a slew of unforgettable Tyrant tunes and you start to get an idea of what to expect. listed resident Mike Khoury has established himself as Burridge’s opening DJ of choice in North America, so he should provide the perfect start to a very special night of music.
.
Plenty of additional production is being trucked in to transform Club 525 into something a bit special for the night so we think you’d be a fool to miss out on it. What’s more, we’ll be there taking photos and video for the blog, so you should really come along for the bonus of making it into one of our galleries or videos!
.
Saturday Day: listed gets Twisted
The Scoop: The madness continues as Messrs. Burridge and Richards are joined by Danny Howells and Bill Patrick alongside listed residents Hac Le, Mike Khoury, Nikita, Dory, Hoj and Naveen G on the listed parade float. With every possible style of electronic music to be heard in the San Francisco Civic Center on parade day, you may have to do the rounds early and wind up front-and-center at the listed float for the better part of the day. You’ll be missing out otherwise.
.
Saturday Night: Gallop Sessions 02 with Danny Howells
The Scoop: The baton gets handed off to Danny Howells as listed moves into their third party of the weekend with opening support from Naveen G. Howells doesn’t need much introduction and the venue is being kept secret until the day of the gig, but I can share that it has a phenomenal sound system and is very intimate. If you’re at all interested in getting to this show you better have a cunning way of getting your hands on a ticket because it’s invite only!
.
Sunday: The Morning After the Love
The Scoop: If you’re still standing at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning and at a loose end—which you probably will be—get yourself over to The EndUp for 15 hours of continued sillyness. On the bill are Craig Richards, Bill Patrick, Nikola Baytala, Hac Le, Nikita, Hoj, Dory and several other unannounced special guests. This listed party is now in it’s 4th year and considered the official closing party to a very long weekend. It’s even been called the ‘Sunday School for Degenerates’ of the parade weekend, and you’ll be in good company with a big group of new friends you’ve known for 48 hours, stiff drinks and addictive beats to keep you entertained well into Sunday night.
.
In conclusion there are many places you could go in San Francisco over parade weekend to hear great music. In our opinion though it’s simple: listed are throwing the best parties. They will have the best sound systems. You’ll meet the friendliest of people at their events and become part of the listed family in the process. They’re in it for the right reasons, and it shows. Just be sure you don’t miss your flight home on Monday like I did. Twice.

Regular readers of the blog will know that last month Naveen G. did a guest episode for our rv_cast. It was a great mix and well worth a listen if you haven’t already. [You can check it out HERE.] Unfortunately I wasn’t able to catch up with Naveen in time to include a few interview questions with the post but I’m pleased to be able to share them with you now. He also sent over a brand new live mix for me to post which you can find after the questions…
.
What was the first track you produced that got a release? How important was that release to further your DJing career?
.
The first tracks I made were with Reason when it first came out. I spent a summer figuring out the basics and ended up with two tracks that I was reasonably happy with which I mailed out to a handful of places with some actually sending me responses. I then managed to pass Deep Dish a cd when they played gig at a tiny club in Chicago, well before they got to the status that they have now. I got an email back from Ali two days later that said he’d be road testing the tracks the rest of the month and soon after that, he signed both to Yoshitoshi. He then played Chicago a couple of months later and told me one of the tracks made it into Satoshi’s Nubreed CD. I couldn’t really have asked for a better setup for a first track. The tracks weren’t released under my own name, which is a completely different and much longer story, so it didnt do that much for my name recognition but it was good positive feedback to keep working on more tunes.
.
Are you still producing, and if so what’s coming up?
.
My DJ schedule has been fairly busy given how it gets squeezed in with the day job, so there’s been a significant slowdown in my output but I’ve got loads of half done tracks that need just a touch more work to get done. As always, they’re all over the place style-wise so I gotta set my mind to finishing them soon.
.
I consider you an accomplished DJ who knows exactly how to warm-up for a headliner, or headline a gig yourself. What advice can you give to people who are just getting into DJing?
.
The best thing about the digital age is that it has freed DJs from the financial limitations that buying records used to hold us to. When buying vinyl, I could never afford to buy all the tracks I wanted to play, so you end up buying records that all fit into one genre. But now you can buy MP3s from 5 different styles and figure out how to make it work, and thereby making your own sound. This is I think how I best like to construct my sets. By buying and playing music that is all over the place but making it work, you get the feel of how to work with the crowd and take a set in many different places – a very useful tool for the opening slots. And by digging through tons of music every week, you find all these peaktime gems at the same time that are not played out but can really rock a crowd and those get saved for the headlining slots.
.
So the key is really to just buy what you love and never play a track that you dont love. If you love every track you play, people can read into that and get into it that much more. A diverse music collection is never a bad thing, because you never know what you’re getting yourself into with some of these gigs, no matter what the promoter tells you.
.
What are your top 3 labels right now, and who are your top 3 producers right now?
.
Producers: Hugo, Nikitin and Semikashev, Dmitri Andreas
Labels: Discoteca, Alchemy, Systematic
.
What’s the best party you’ve been to this year, and why?
.
Joris Voorn at Cielo, July 3rd. The man can translate the technical genius of his carefully edited Balance CD straight into a rocking set of all things house and techno that had both the music heads and the uninitiated random clubgoers going absolutely nuts. Everyone was with him on every track he dropped, from the classic chicago house to the heady minimal grooves. One of my top nights ever at that club and easily one of the best sets I’ve ever heard from start to finish.
.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played, and why?
.
The Twilight on the Tikki this past March at WMC. Being able to open for SOS allows you to really play a wide, diverse range of tunes since they bring that to their live shows and their mixes—like on their Balance compilation—so it was heaven to have a clued in crowd as a captive audience on the floating beach that is the Tikki Boat. I was able to start with some cosmic disco, and play through some deep house into some minimal and tech house and just really stretch those legs as a DJ. Its very rare that you get to really build a set like that purely from scratch and it went down perfectly. Sometime opening does beat headlining and that was one of those sets.
.
Thanks Naveen!
.
.Naveen G – Live at Bar 13 (07-25-09) – No track list available.

What I can say about Naveen G? Well, apart from being a decent bloke, he’s a great DJ and accomplished producer.
.
His first big break as a producer was with “Afterthought/Looking Glass” which he produced under his Samsara moniker. It saw a release on Yoshitoshi Records and was subsequently licensed for use on Satoshi Tomiie’s Nubreed compilation. (Nubreed is one of the mix compilations put out by Global Underground, for anyone who might not know.) From then on he’s seen his tracks released on various other high profile labels like M-Theory, Proton Music, and Toes in the Sand Recordings.
.
As a DJ he knows how to warm-up a crowd in the right manner. He know that it’s about taking your time and building the vibe in a slow and well thought out way. By the time he hands over the decks to [insert headlining DJ], the crowd are always pumped and ready for more. With all that said, I’ve also heard him headline gigs in his own right. He always has an immaculate selection of tracks to hand, and knows exactly which one to drop next to ensure that the night goes off in a big way.
.
As a long time resident of Proton Radio—with possibly with the longest running show on the station—it’s clear to see that he’s a time proven veteran behind the decks. In addition to his Proton activities he’s also a member of the listed Bookings roster, and a takes his place frequently in listed Production line-ups for their events around the country.
.
Naveen G’s rv_cast starts off meaning business. A smooth but grooving vibe that quickly moves into what becomes a full-on techno work out. That’s not the end of it as the mix seamlessly moves into what some people would call progressive, but it’s not really progressive how I remember progressive. It’s not really traditional techno either, but it is dark and moody and full of energy.
.
In this mix, you can sort of tell that Naveen G’s roots originally hark back to progressive, however with his selection of slamming tracks and silky smooth transitions this is Naveen G’s unique brand of techno.
.
So, with all that said have a listen for yourself, and I hope you enjoy Naveen G’s rv_cast!
