Movement 2010 Update – Villalobos and 31 Others Added to Lineup

Movement 2010

The Movement 2010 Electronic Music Festival in Detroit just got better! Yesterday, Paxahau announced that Ricardo Villalobos will be performing at the event, along with 31 other newly added acts like Booka Shade, Derrick May, Marco Carola, and Ghostland Observatory. Paxahau also announced the addition of a fifth stage, sponsored by Movement Torino.

Renowned minimal techno DJ/producer, Villalobos last performed in Detroit in 2002 when he played at the Paxahau Electronic Music Festival (PEMF), a four-day party that was held at the now closed Panacea Nighclub.

“Ricardo is looking forward to coming back to Detroit again after all these years,” said his agent Goetz Guse of Cocoon Agency out of Frankfurt, Germany. “His return to the United States and Detroit for the Movement Electronic Music Festival is exclusive to Paxahau. He isn’t booked to perform at any other venue in the States, and we don’t anticipate he will be this year.”

In addition to Villalobos, the contemporary dance music duo Booka Shade from Berlin has been scheduled for a live performance, along with electro, rock, and funk duo Ghostland Observatory who will also perform live.

“We are feeling very good about how this year’s Movement lineup has come together,” said Jason Huvaere, Executive Director of Movement Electronic Music Festival. “With today’s announcement of Ricardo and the other 31 artists, the response we are getting is extremely positive.”

Cassy Joins the RV DJ Roster!

Cassy Electronic Music DJ

I’m writing this post to officially welcome the newest addition to the RV DJ roster. ….dear blog readers, meet Cassy!

If you read my last post, then you know Sam and I just had the pleasure of hearing Cassy play a killer live set last Sunday at the Varsity All Stars party in Chicago. It’s really a pleasure to have her as a part of the RV community. Clearly, the resume is rock solid: she’s holding down the residency at Panoramabar in Berlin…she was picked to mix the first Panoramabar CD compilation…she has releases on labels like M_nus, Playhouse, Get Physical, etc….she started her own label (called Cassy)…she’s worked in the studio with the likes of Steve Bug, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, and Swayzak…..and so on and so on…

Her numerous accolades are covered on her profile page in our "Meet the DJs" section. What I want to talk about her is more a personal take on her as an artist…

One of the things that really stands out about her is her diverse taste and clear appreciation for music. While Cassy clearly knows her stuff when it comes to electronic music, you have to respect the fact that she also loves everybody from Sade and Ella Fitzgerald to the Talking Heads and Joseph Haydn. As we true music lovers know, good tunes transcend genre-based limitations. When I was watching Cassy play last weekend in Chicago, I knew I was watching an artist express herself. This is a subtle point, but I think it’s worth noting because it’s sometimes missing in DJ performances. When it comes to rock n’ roll, hip hop, jazz, or most other genres of music, you know that you’re watching a musician perform because he, she, or they are actually playing instruments and/or singing music (that they most likely wrote). In the case of a DJ, however, he or she is playing tunes that were created by somebody else, and this can sometimes take on the feel of a rote function, rather than a true performance or reflection of that DJ’s personality and artistry.

In Cassy’s case, you can feel her personality coming through the speakers. As she plays, she has this soft, warm countenance and mannerisms that suggest a sincere humility, and yet her tunes are owning the crowd so she’d be perfectly entitled to look cocky and be jumping up and down behind the decks. This is a fairly subtle observation, but I like listening to and watching DJs as they play to get a feel for the spirit that’s oozing through the speakers.

Cassy ProfileI also had the privilege of speaking with Cassy very briefly after she was finished playing her set. She had a very warm, friendly, and humble demeanor, even though she had just finished rockin’ a killer party ;) …she was completely approachable and genuinely appreciative of my compliments about her set.

I hope we get to be involved in other events where Cassy’s on the talent list. It was really a pleasure meeting her, and I think she makes a great addition to our DJ roster.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to check out the free mix we posted on Cassy’s profile page!

Enjoy!

Varsity All Stars Party Recap

Varsity All Stars Hac Le

Well, Sam and I are back from Chicago, and I’m feeling obliged to write a post about the Varsity All Stars party that went down on Sunday. ….we had a blast!

Let me just start by saying that listed Productions is a firstrate outfit! These guys really handle their business. Their events are well-planned, well-orchestrated, and well-attended…and they’re tons of fun….so, many thanks to the listed crew for making the Varsity All Stars party happen!

…and now a brief description of the event…

Before you even got to the venue, you could hear the bass bumpin’ blocks away :D …I love that feeling of anticipation you get when you get near an electronic music event and you can start to hear the tunes. …so anyway, when I rolled into the event, none other than the venerable Hac Le was on the decks, tagging with Mike Khoury, and these guys were straight bangin’ it out! …thumpin’ tech house sounds getting everybody in the right state of mind.

As the afternoon progressed, the energy started to build in the outside area…especially after Cassy got on the decks. Cassy started her set on a relaxed note, and gradually built the energy up over the next few hours. By the time night fell, even more people had showed up, and the crowd’s energy was palpable.

Varsity All Stars Party

Everybody was feelin’ right and enjoying the scene. Cassy would go into a breakdown, and then when she’d drop the beat, people would start jumping around like cats on a hot tin roof. You gotta love it when you’re in a crowd of people who are all on the same wavelength, just letting go, and enjoying quality electronic music.

After Cassy finished her set, Naveen G jumped on the decks. Cool, calm, and collected as always, Naveen proceeded to hold it down. I really dig this guy’s technician-like style.

All in all, the Varsity All Stars party was an outstanding event. I’m really glad RV was a part of it!

…be on the lookout for more RV-listed events in the future!

It’s Goin’ Down Again — The Varsity All Stars & Cassy Tearin’ It up in Chicago

Varisty All Stars

It’s goin’ down once again!!! …and Eddie B’s starting to get excited…

We do a lot of work over here at RV, and being based in Louisville, Kentucky, we don’t always have big electronic music events happening (no disrespect to my hometown because I love The ‘Ville). …so it’s great when we have opportunities to bathe ourselves in tight sounds at premier music events, like the one happening this week in Chicago!

This Sunday, September 7th, listed Productions is bringing you the Varsity All Stars party, and RV has signed up as a sponsor. The party is at Moretti’s (1645 West Jackson Street in Chicago). Things will get started at noon, and they’ll keep going until midnight. There will be food, drinks, and (of course) killer tunes playing. …That’s 12 straight hours of goodness; can you handle it?

CassyThe talent for this event is overwhelming. First off, we have Cassy holding it down as the headliner. Of Carribean and Austrian descent and hailing from Berlin, Cassy will be importing some superbad, cutting-edge house and techno tunes to keep the party live. In September alone, she has gigs in New York City, Chicago, Essen, Nagoya, and Tokyo. …and you know she’s not comin’ all the way to Chicago to play games!

In addition to Cassy, we have the Varsity All Stars roster stepping up to bang things out. These guys are like mailmen: they deliver :D …for those who don’t already know the Varsity All Stars team, it includes

Dory (Los Angeles)

Hac Le (Chicago)

Jeffrey Allen (San Francisco)

Mike Khoury (London-Chicago)

Naveen G (New York City)

Nikita (San Francisco)

As if this talent lineup weren’t enough, we’ve also got a long list of heavy-hitting local talent signed up. This list includes

Brenda D (Chicago)

Brian Gardner (Chicago)

Chris Caliendo (Chicago)

Dirtybird (Chicago)

Funk Shui (Chicago)

Jason Patrick (Detroit)

Jesse Lee (Chicago)

Johnny Chaos (Miami)

Justin Reed (Chicago)

RJ Pickens (Chicago)

Sasha Navarro (Chicago)

Sassmouth (London)

Steven Robert (Detroit)

Striz (Chicago)
