rv_cast – One of the Best Dance Music Podcasts

rv_cast

I’ve been meaning to write a post for some time now to make the bold, unbiased claim that I think RV has one of the best dance music podcasts available today! Seriously, I don’t know if you’ve been tuning in, but the rv_cast has featured some killer episodes…all underground and all fresh.

I felt the need to write this post because I want to help get the word out. The rv_cast is not as visible as some of the other dance music podcasts, but I think we’re gradually appearing on more people’s radars. Sam has been the brains and muscle behind the podcast, arranging for guest mixes and contributing a mix or two of his own. He’s seen to it that we stay true to the music, offering an original, intelligent series of mixes for folks who appreciate the real stuff.

I’d prefer that you not take my word for it on this one. I encourage you to check out a few rv_cast episodes. For example, check out rv_cast 013, mixed by Estroe. I’ve listened to this one countless times, and it just keeps getting better. Estroe laid down a sophisticated set of tracks and blended them together perfectly.

Another rv_cast episode that’s really worth checking out is the one from Jason Patrick. This guy has skillz. I gained real respect for Jason after hearing him play live at the Varsity All Stars 2009 party (headlined by Anja Schneider). His rv_cast mix is a finely crafted work with a perfect flow – a true specimen of aural artistry.

I’ll briefly discuss one more rv_cast episode here…the one from Alland Byallo. I think this episode was a sort of breakout mix for us, and it will certainly rewire your brain if you listen to it intently. Alland’s mix is one of those that you can have fun studying and analyzing…really focusing on the transitions. It’s intelligent, crisp, and clean. Great stuff!

There hasn’t been a bad rv_cast episode yet. I would write about all of the episodes here, but I don’t want to overwhelm you with recommendations. I do, however, have to give a few other honorable mentions here…you should definitely check out the episodes by Sam (of course!), Savas Pascalidis, Angel Alanis, and Naveen G. They’re all hot to death!

Enjoy these existing rv_cast episode, and keep an eye out for new ones coming soon!

rv_cast 011 Mixed by Sam Gracie

rv_cast 011 Mixed by Sam Gracie | Resonant Vibes PodcastThis week I’ve put together a slightly longer podcast than usual which runs for about 1 h 26 mins and it’s a DJ mix recorded with a single take. It starts off housey and groovy before getting deep and techy. Then it goes into a bit of techno before wrapping up with some deeper stuff again. I really enjoyed mixing it as I was able to combine tunes that work really well in a club alongside some others that I might not get away with playing out. What’s more, it’s been a few weeks since my last mix for the podcast which means I had a great selection of new tunes to use.
.
Keep an eye on the blog for new episodes as we’ve got some great guests lined up for you. If you haven’t had a chance to check out some of our previous guests episodes I encourage you to do so

rv_cast 007 “On the Way to the Zoo” Mixed by Sam Gracie

rv_cast 007 Mixed by Sam GracieFor this episode I found myself on both sides of a common argument about DJing. In many regards it’s similar to the overdone argument between mac or PC, and it’s based around the idea that puritan DJs will turn their nose up at any sort of mix created using software rather than using the traditional combination of turntables and a mixer.
.
Conversely “laptop DJs” will move mountains to hammer home the idea that beat matching is not what defines you as a DJ. I think all sides would agree it’s much more than that; it’s track selection, it’s smooth EQing, it’s about the way you transition between tracks, and it’s ultimately about the flow of the mix as a whole.
.
For the rv_cast episodes that I’ve mixed, I’ve done most of them with turntables and my lovely Allen and Heath mixer (sorry for the blatant plug). Some of them turned out great, and others are a little rough around the edges but I think that’s the beauty of it. You can hear the human touch in those mixes but I much prefer to play “records” and consider myself a puritan DJ for the most part, so that’s OK by me. I find sitting behind a laptop a little frustrating, and to be honest it takes longer to do a mix on the computer than simply hitting record and mixing live for an hour.
.
All that being said, sometimes it’s nice to be able to work on a mix and not be depend on turntables and mixer. Regular readers of our blog will know that Eddie and I spent last weekend covering the Electric Zoo Festival up in New York City which involved quite a bit of traveling. I also knew that I wasn’t going to get a chance to mix a new podcast episode over the weekend, so I decided to do it on my laptop. (There are plenty of Electric Zoo posts on the blog if you’re interested.)
.
By contrast being able to do a mix while you’re on the road is quite rewarding. Time that would have otherwise been wasted can be put to good use, and it’s quite fun to be able to work on music from a cramped airplane seat. It doesn’t come close to the experience of mixing records but you can’t do that at 30,000 feet.
.
So, are you puritan DJ, or a laptop enthusiast or a mixture of both?
.
Just for the record I think that beat matching is absolutely part of what defines you as a DJ. Unless you’ve tried it you don’t know how tricky it can be! But after all is said and done it’s not important how a mix was put together as it’s the music that should move you. I hope you enjoy this episode.

rv_cast 006 mixed by Sam Gracie

rv_cast_006_blogThis is the latest episode of the Resonant Vibes podcast mixed by yours truly. Recorded last week as always in a live session with a single take, it’s a straight forward DJ set featuring a bunch of cool tunes from the site.
.
It’s starts off pretty deep and techy, before moving into more of a housier vibe. From there it’s back to the tech before stepping things up and moving firmly into techno. I had the chance to work in a few of Dub Taylors “Human Response” tracks towards the end of the mix, that are somewhere between DJ tools and full tracks, and that just flow really well together.
.
.
Anyway, It’s not too far from what you’d hear when I play live and I hope you enjoy it.

rv_cast 003 – Mixed by Sam Gracie – The Goods Just Keep Comin’

RV Cast

We’re on a roll with the RV Casts. Sam has donned his DJ hat once again to bring you another creatively blended sampler of some of the freshest underground tunes on the market today. For Sam, I’m sure being a DJ and the COO of RV is kind of like being a kid who owns a candy store. We love dance music over here, and every week loads of new tunes keep rolling in!
.
Sam was really pleased with the quality of the tracks in this mix. If you take one look at the tracklist, you’ll see why…he’s featuring releases from labels like Trapez, Kompakt, Om Records, and CMYK…and from artists like Radio Slave and Gui Boratto.
.
Like RV Cast 002, this mix was recorded live, so it has that intangible feel of being a true DJ set. It keeps chugging from start to finish, going from one solid track to the next…and the transitions are spontaneous and ear-pleasing. Have a listen; we think you’ll dig it.
.
Of course, for those interested, I’ve posted a tracklist below with hyperlinks in case you want to grab one of these gems in our shop.
.
1. Amir – Rocky Mountain [Trapez Ltd]
2. Berik M – Cenote Drive (Avgoustino and Manolaco Remix) [Blaq Records]
3. Broombeck – The Clapper (Daso Remix) [Opussum Recordings]
4. Drehkontrolle – True Funky [Malatoid Records]
5. John Monkman – Phono Spirit (Lee Jones Remix) [Further Project Records]

7. Gui Boratto – No Turning Back (The Mole’s MMD Mix) [Kompakt]
8. MRI – Rough [Resopal Schallware]
9. Radioslave – Orchestrating Maneuvers In The Dark (Edit) [Om Records]
10. Gene – Goa Morning [Soap]
11. Alessio Mereu – Two Months [CMYK]

RV Cast 002 – Mixed by Sam Gracie – You’ll Like This!

Mixed by Sam GracieAre you ready to have your noodle baked? If so, then click the play icon below to check out RV Cast 002, mixed by my man Sam.
.
I meant to write a blog post about Sam’s RV Cast 001 because it was a rock solid mix. I just didn’t have time to get to it.
.
Sam started this RV Cast project without a lot of fanfare, which I actually think is cool. We’re not making a big deal out of it, but I think the idea will lead to some cool results. The concept is simple (and, in my opinion, long overdue): we get loads of music every week, and it seems only right to have an outlet for sharing the goods with you. Sam is going to be rounding up various gems from our shop on a regular basis and then mixing them up for your listening pleasure. He’s also planning to get some guest mixes to spice things up — I mean, why not?
.
I’ve got this RV Cast 002 pounding in my headphones as I write this, and I’m really into it! It’s gratifying to know that all of these high quality tunes are available in our shop. I feel like we’ve come a long way in terms of our content selection (though I should tell you we’ve got loads of new labels in the pipeline).
.
This mix has a great underground vibe to it – techy, almost minimal at times, and oh so delightfully fresh ;) Also, you can tell it’s not a computer-generated mix, which is refreshing since the perfectly done Ableton sets are so ubiquitous these days. Sam laid this tracks down and gave us the first take; definitely good stuff!
.
For your convenience, I’ve provided a tracklist below. I’ve also hyperlinked each track to the shop so you download it if you like it.
.
1. Leo Fernandez – Que Si Las Vitaminas
2. Paul Beynon and Darius Bassiray – Jeebuz Champ
3. Fish Go Deep and Tracey K – Final Tide
4. KONO – Stop Falling
5. Extrawelt – Clap’s Cally
6. Mimanson – Escafandra
7. Plasmik – Sneaky Dee
8. Jimpster – Just the Kind of Girl
9. A.Paul – Breath
10. Paul Cooper and Daley Padley – Animals
11. Sergio Sorrentino – M
12. Kabuto – The Jokers
13. Kabuto – Mala Influencia
14. Joseph Petrin – Bianca
15. Arnaud Le Texier – Do You Like The Bass

Sam Gracie Gets Nasty on a Shake Down Episode…

Sam GracieOnce again, I have the privilege of bringing our blog readers some smokin’ hot tunes, compliments of my man Sam Gracie. If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, then you may have heard some of his previous mixes…but this one stands out for a few reasons in my mind…

In a recent conversation, Sam told me that he thinks he’s found his new sound. When we first met, back in 2003, he was playing cutting-edge progressive house…very tight stuff…but, like most forward-thinking/moving artists, his sound has evolved. He went through a phase, during the earlier stages of RV’s growth, where he was spending less time on the decks and in the studio…but these days, he’s definitely re-connected with the DJ part of himself.

Sam played a killer set at our VIBE at Alto event in Pittsburgh, and he followed that up with a great set at a venue here in Louisville called the "Pink Door." I’d have to say I agree with Sam about his settling into a new sound. There’s a consistency and personality to his sets these days, and you can hear it in this mix he provided for the Shake Down Podcast. It’s a bit difficult to describe the new style, but I’d say the phrases "techno-oriented" and "dance floor conscious" begin to paint the picture ;) I think this mix gives a good sense of what it’s like to hear him play a live set…which always keeps my feet movin’ :)

If you haven’t already done it, click the play icon below, and enjoy!!

“Selected” March 2008 Mix from Sam Gracie

DJ Sam GracieAll right, it’s been a while since I last posted a mix from my man Sam, but here’s one for your guaranteed listening pleasure!

As owners of a digital music store, we try to remain impartial when it comes to genres…because we want Resonant Vibes to provide a quality experience for everybody who loves electronic music, be it house, drum and bass, electro, or whatever. That said, I think Sam tips his hand in this mix ;) I think he shows the sort of tunes that really get good to him. We could probably call it "Bigalechno" because it’s a distinct ilk of techno…not the minimal vibe and not the heavy pounding stuff…it’s that techno that has some glitch and pop, but also rolls and grooves along…the kinda stuff that tickles your synapses and keeps your head nodding. I’ve heard Sam mix tracks in a number of different genres, but I feel like he’s at home here.

While the mix was prepared "on the fly," I think it’s got a polished feel. I think we’ll be hearing more from Sam qua DJ because RV is quickly reaching a point that will allow him to spend more time indulging his passion. …actually, we’re planning an event in Pittsburgh where he’ll be playing. I will be posting to share more details on that very soon!

Anyway, I hope you get as much enjoyment from this mix as I’ve gotten!

Shake Down Episodes – Guest Mix from Sam Gracie and Episode 47

DJ Sam Gracie - Resonant VibesFor those who missed it, I wanted to write a quick post to let you know that last week RV’s own Sam Gracie put together a guest mix for the Shake Down Podcast. As usual, the mix is Blazin Hot and definitely worth checking out. Sam starts things out on a house-y note before taking things in a techier direction.  If you’re not already subscribed to the Shake Down Podcast, you can find Sam mix at www.ShakeDownPodcast.com listed as Sub-Episode 2 August 20 ’07.

…while you’re there, you can also check out the latest Shake Down Podcast (Episode 47), with some solid trance tunes dropped by DJ Christopher Reddick.

Enjoy!
