Introducing Damon Fonooni, AKA Habersham

habersham1

I’m writing this post on the heels of Damon’s one below. I should probably have posted this one before his was published – but better late than never, it’s been a busy week!

Anyway, I’m pleased to offer the blog readers an introduction to Damon Fonooni; a new addition to the list of Resonant Vibes blog contributors.

Habersham as he’s more commonly known has been a stalwart of the the American underground dance music scene for some time. An accomplished electronic music producer and a long-time advocate of Apple’s Logic Pro for his productions he’s crafted a unique futuristic sound over the years. In my opinion his sound is one that sits outside the box of the trendier stuff you might hear on your local dance floor; his productions are always cutting-edge and highly original, sculptured to make you think about what you’re listening to.

You can check out one of his tracks in the rv network HERE.

It’s these qualities that made us take note, and eventually approach Damon about working on our SoundTheory project. The concept behind SoundTheory is to produce sample packs that have been designed by talented and well regarded electronic music producers. The packs are crafted to have an emphasis on being performance-ready ‘out of the box’ which reflects the approach Damon has taken towards his own live performance.

As Damon mentioned we’re working on a new sample pack concept with him, and it’s one that’s really exciting. I don’t want to give too much away, but we’re looking forward to doing something a bit different with it. :)

Outside of samples, Habersham has had a slew of releases on some noteworthy labels including his own Lobotomy Records imprint, Bedrock Records, AudioTherapy, Global Underground, Auralism, and EQ.

As we’re working with Damon on these sample projects, we thought we’d invite him to get involved with the blog because he’s always shown support for rv and he’s an intelligent and articulated writer. Combine that with the fact that as an artist he has the opportunity to travel extensively which should make for some good stories. All in all we think that his addition to the blog will be great and we’re really glad to have him involved. I hope you enjoy reading his posts as much as I do!

Exclusive Pre-Release of SoundTheories EP 01!

SoundTheories EP 01

At last, the time has come to announce the Exclusive Pre-Release of the SoundTheories EP 01. I’ve copied the release write-up below so you can get the full scoop…don’t sleep on this one!

Ilmli’s debut single, "All Dressed up and Nowhere to Go," is Lobotomy’s latest slice of music theory, and my how this one bumps!

Ilmli is known to many as half of Ominous Cloud, the champions of organic house, broken beat and downtempo, who achieved a signature sound by fusing electronics with jazz, soul, and funk. He’s known to us as Troy Stoner (yes that’s his real name), an artist who started playing trumpet in the sixth grade and decided early make music the focus of his life. His educational career continued with in-depth training at an audio school. In the midst of his training as a composer, he entered and won both the Sasha and BT remix contests. As a result, he co-remixed two tracks with BT, Kaskade’s "Steppin Out" and Sarah McLachlan’s "Dirty Little Secret."

Now Mr. ilmli finds himself the first place winner of Sound Theory 01 original track competition, hosted by Habersham, Resonant Vibes, and Lobotomy Records. He carefully deconstructed the sample pack to deliver a heavy grooving breakbeat with warmth and analogue funk.

To round out the package Habersham provides his theory on how to twist, re-twist, and mangle sounds into what he calls his "favorite remix in ages"! It’s like being kicked in the stomach with a thrompin’ Haber-boot, only to find out there’s no way to stop dancing. Experimental techno/tech-house is perhaps the only way, if any, to describe it.

We encourage you to enroll in Dr. Stoner’s Sound Theory 01 class, Bumpin’ 101, which promptly begins now.

Enjoy!

New Featured DJ – Habersham

Habersham - Featured DJWe’ve added Habersham as the newest Featured DJ on Resonant Vibes, so I figured I’d write a brief post to let everybody know.

Since launching our site, we’ve worked with a number of DJs and artists on various projects. In working on the SoundTheory 01 sample collection, we’ve had the privilege of getting to know Habersham better on a musical and personal level. …and I can definitely say this guy is a Class Act ;)

For his Featured DJ page, we asked him various questions about his recent career highlights, forthcoming projects, etc. …and, of course, we asked him some questions to provide a bit more behind the scenes info about the SoundTheory 01 project.

Habersham’s Exclusive RV Mix (SoundTheory 01 Studio Session)

As you may know by now, we recently launched our own line of samples: Resonant Vibes SoundTheory. To create the first installment, we turned to Habersham, an artist who needs no introduction on this blog. Last week, we added Habersham as a DJ on the RV roster. As with all of our other DJs, we asked him to give us an exclusive mix that we could share with you. What he gave us ended up blowin’ the hair off our heads!

Before I describe the mix in more detail, I should point out that it’s quite unconventional. (Of course, those who know Habersham’s music would already expect this to be the case.) This mix is not just another progressive, techy, or electro mix in which a DJ played some tight tracks and blended them smoothly together. While the mix contains elements of these familiar genres, it verges in concept and in sound toward the experimental direction. Regardless of your genre preferences, it’s clear that this mix was created by a true technician.

To create the mix, Habersham decided to use only elements from the SoundTheory 01 collection; no tracks, just a constantly evolving sequence of sounds and rhythms. I think this mix represents nothing short of a landmark for electronic music DJs. We all know how hard DJs work to create seamless, organic pieces of music. After all, that’s one of the chief things that we value in electronic music DJs, right? Unlike the typical radio DJ who plays one track and then simply stops it and puts another one on; our esteemed DJs are able to make transitions that ultimately create a larger, unified piece of music. Usually, the idea has been to select tracks that go together and to play them in such a sequence as to tell a musical story. …but now it seems we’ve reached a new frontier…instead of going from one discrete track to another, DJs can "transition" by progressing through a constantly mutating set of sounds. In this exclusive mix, Habersham is playing skillfully on the new frontier of DJ-ing where the barrier of track distinctions has been broken. To give you a better idea of what’s going on in the mix, he sent a screenshot, which I’ve provided below.

Sometimes a picture is worth 1,000 words, and I think this screenshot gives an immediate idea of the complexity and structure of the mix.

Well, I guess the only other thing I want to say is, you can check out the mix by clicking HERE!

Enjoy!!!
